Bundesliga: Augsburg 2-2 Hoffenheim - Late chances missed as teams settle for point apiece
Hoffenheim's hopes of a late winner were dashed when Alexis Claude-Maurice sent his effort over the bar...
Augsburg got off to a rapid start with a quickfire double inside the opening quarter of an hour. Alexis Claude-Maurice set off on a slaloming run from halfway, and after exchanging passes with Robin Fellhauer, he struck a low, hard shot past Oliver Baumann on 11 minutes.
Jeffrey Gouweleeuw's long ball over the top found Michael Gregoritsch, who out-muscled Ozan Kabak and scored to make it 2-0. Christian Ilzer's Champions League chasers were stunned, and only a last-ditch Albian Hajdari challenge denied Anton Kade a chance to score.
Hoffenheim's strong performance continued, with Anton Kade forcing a great save from Baumann, showcasing Augsburg's vulnerability
Hoffenheim had been quiet until that point, but they halved the deficit when Vladimir Coufal's corner was met by a diving header from Robin Hranac, his countryman, with 10 minutes to go before halftime.
Hoffenheim wasn't done yet, and they pulled themselves level three minutes before halftime. Fisnik Asllani picked out Bazoumana Toure with a clever backheel in tight space, and the 20-year-old's square ball wrong-footed Finn Dahmen in the home goal and nestled in the corner via the inside of the post.
Despite drawing level in fortuitous circumstances, Hoffenheim's visitors were almost behind again in stoppage time of what was a breathless first half. Albian Hajdari made a critical intervention, clearing Jeffrey Gouweleeuw's header off the line, before Michael Gregoritsch struck the bar with a half-volley from 12 yards.
The second half started off differently, with Hoffenheim creating a big chance just 30 seconds in. Tim Lemperle glanced a header onto the roof of the net after Grischa Prömel's clever flick-on.
Tim Lemperle threatened again moments later, with a low shot saved after an intricate link-up with Asllani and Andrej Kramaric in the box.

It was Claude-Maurice again at the 70-minute mark, as his low, hard effort took a wicked deflection and almost caught out Baumann, but the Hoffenheim goalkeeper reacted well and saved with his legs.
Hoffenheim's hopes of a late winner were dashed when Alexis Claude-Maurice sent his effort over the bar after being gifted a chance by Bernardo's tackle on Kade in the box.
Hoffenheim's Leon Avdullahu made a crucial goal-line clearance to deny Augsburg's Dimitris Giannoulis, after
Oliver Baumann spilled a cross.
Neither side could find a winner, extending their winless runs. Hoffenheim's four-game drought continues, hurting their European bid, while Augsburg's five-game winless streak keeps them stuck in mid-table.
