Bayern Edge Real Madrid in UCL Classic to Reach Semi-Finals

Bayern Munich reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in dramatic style, defeating Real Madrid 4-3 at the Allianz Arena to go through 6-4 on aggregate.

Bayern’s first-leg lead was wiped out in 35 seconds when Manuel Neuer strayed outside his box with the ball and passed straight to Arda Guler, who fired first-time from 35 yards into the net before the keeper could get back to his line.

The early blow didn’t faze the hosts, who leveled the game five minutes later when Aleksandar Pavlovic headed Joshua Kimmich’s corner past a struggling Andriy Lunin.

Bayern controlled most of the play for the rest of the opening quarter, but Real had the best chance when Kylian Mbappe was played through, only for Konrad Laimer to deny him with a superb block.

Kimmich was involved again from a corner in the 27th minute. After the set-piece was played short, he collected the return pass and hit a fierce shot that Lunin pushed away well.

That save from the Ukrainian proved key two minutes later. Los Blancos won a free-kick 25 yards out and Guler showed he could beat Neuer from distance even with the keeper in goal, curling it into the top corner.

Vincent Kompany’s side responded well again. After Serge Gnabry and Pavlovic both tested Lunin, Dayot Upamecano slid an incisive pass through to Harry Kane, who took a touch to set himself before slotting into the bottom corner to restore Bayern’s aggregate lead.

Vinicius Junior took over in the final five minutes of the half.

First, he ran onto a long ball forward from Brahim Diaz and curled an effort onto the top of the crossbar. Then, on the next attack, he used his pace down the left before squaring for Mbappe to tap home and give Real their third lead of the night.
