Arsenal vs Sporting: Arteta Rejects Fatigue Excuses as Gunners Chase Champions League Semi-Final Spot
| Arteta calls on Arsenal to seize Champions League chance amid selection dilemma vs Sporting |
Mikel Arteta urges Arsenal to “enjoy the opportunity” of reaching a second straight Champions League semi-final as they host Sporting Lisbon with a 1-0 lead.
The Gunners face a selection headache before Sunday’s Premier League showdown with Man City, with injuries and recent losses piling pressure on Arteta’s squad.
Mikel Arteta says Arsenal should embrace the chance to reach the Champions League semi-finals.
Arteta told Arsenal that tiredness can’t justify their recent slip-up, and called on his team to respond by seeing off Sporting Lisbon in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
The Gunners are chasing a second straight semi-final appearance in Europe’s top club competition and host Sporting on Wednesday with a 1-0 aggregate lead after last week’s win in Lisbon.
But the Gunners enter the second leg facing scrutiny after dropping three of their last four matches across all competitions.
Arsenal’s slump has already proven costly, with a 2-0 loss to Manchester City in the League Cup final and a FA Cup quarter-final exit to second-tier Southampton ending two chances at silverware.
Adding to Arteta’s frustration, Saturday’s 2-1 home loss to Bournemouth put Arsenal’s bid for a first Premier League title in 22 years at risk.
Arsenal sit just six points clear of second-place City, who have a game in hand and welcome Arteta’s side for a pivotal matchup on Sunday.
With that Etihad Stadium clash looming, Arteta now faces a selection headache for the Sporting game.
Should the Arsenal boss name his strongest XI to regain momentum by knocking out the Portuguese champions?
Or does he rotate and rest key players to keep them fresh for the City trip, trusting Arsenal’s squad depth to handle Sporting?
The match will be the north London club’s 54th of the season, a punishing workload that may be catching up to them.
Injuries have hit Arsenal all year, and several of Arteta’s players looked drained against Bournemouth with Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, and Jurrien Timber all unavailable.
Arteta dismisses fatigue excuses ahead of Sporting clash
Asked whether tiredness played a role in their recent losses, Arteta said: “I don't want to pull on those excuses because we've been playing so many games, every three days, and we're going to have to continue to do that.”
“That's the context and that's the scenario, and we have to embrace it and especially enjoy the opportunity.
“That's one of the things that I didn't see from the team, that level of enjoyment in certain moments and the fight that we have to have to really change the course of the game when it gets difficult.
“We're going to have different contexts from here to June, and we need to be able to adapt and resolve all of them, if we want to achieve what we want to achieve.”
Viktor Gyokeres was one of the few Arsenal players who came out of the Bournemouth loss with any credit.

The Sweden striker netted a first-half penalty to bring his season total to 18 goals, showing signs of life after a slow start to his debut campaign with the Gunners.
Still, Gyokeres was largely quiet on his return to former club Sporting in the first leg.
Arteta needs to find a way to make sure Gyokeres’ physicality and clinical finishing become key factors in Arsenal’s push to win the Champions League for the first time.
“We have a lot of important games ahead, and we need to embrace it and to enjoy playing those games,” Gyokeres said.

“It's a great game to have in a few days, so we just need to recover now, leave this behind and make a very good performance on Wednesday.”
