Teenager Mirra Andreeva rallied from a set down to upset Iga Swiatek and book a spot in the WTA clay-court semi-finals in Stuttgart on Friday.

Andreeva defeated the two-time Stuttgart champion 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 and will meet top seed Elena Rybakina in the semis.

Swiatek has claimed four of her six Grand Slams on the clay of the French Open and came into Stuttgart among the favourites, but she struggled against the energetic Russian.

The Pole took advantage of some loose baseline errors from her opponent to claim the opening set, yet Andreeva converted a key break point to level by winning the second.

Swiatek jumped out to a two-game lead in the decider, but Andreeva broke back twice to seize control and close out the match.

The 18-year-old rising star had already knocked out defending champion Jelena Ostapenko in the first round.

In the later match, Rybakina outlasted Leylah Fernandez in a marathon lasting more than three hours. The Kazakh battled back to edge their quarter-final 6-7(5), 6-4, 7-6(6).
