The Premier League is looking into alleged “discriminatory abuse” during Sunderland's 2-1 win over Newcastle United. The incident happened when Newcastle's Sven Botman was getting treatment for a head injury, and referee Anthony Taylor stopped the game briefly.
Sunderland secured a dramatic win at St James' Park, but the focus is now on the alleged abuse, which the Premier League takes very seriously. No further details have been released, and investigations are ongoing.
“Today's match between Newcastle United and Sunderland was temporarily paused during the second half after a report of discriminatory abuse from the crowd, directed at Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida,” the league statement said.
“This is in line with the Premier League's on-field anti-discrimination protocol. The incident at St James’ Park will now be fully investigated. We offer our full support to the player and both clubs.”

Newcastle United has also expressed support for the 25-year-old Dutch defender.
“Our stance is clear - we do not tolerate discrimination of any form. We will work with the authorities to fully investigate and will ensure any individuals are identified and held accountable,” a Newcastle spokesperson said.
Sunderland's incredible comeback was somewhat overshadowed by the alleged discriminatory abuse incident, but Brian Brobbey's 90th-minute winner was the cherry on top of a thrilling performance. They trailed to Anthony Gordon's early goal, but Chemsdine Talbi's equalizer and Brobbey's late strike secured a 2-1 win, completing the league double over Newcastle.
“He (Geertruida) looks OK. It is unacceptable, and important to report and manage the situation properly. He looks OK, but we need to support him,” Sunderland coach Regis le Bris said.
