From Bishop Lavis to Bafana stardom, Appollis' journey

Oswin Appollis' remarkable rise to Bafana Bafana stardom, overcoming adversity and rejection to become a key player for South Africa's 2026 World Cup squad.

“I think that’s one person I will never forget, because if it wasn’t for him, I don’t think I’d be here with Bafana...”

Oswin Appollis, the talented Bafana Bafana star, is now a key player for South Africa's 2026 World Cup squad, but it hasn't been an easy journey. The 24-year-old has faced rejection and struggled with his passion for the game, even considering quitting football altogether.

Appollis has turned his career around with a string of impressive performances, earning him a spot in the national team. His story is one of resilience and determination, overcoming numerous setbacks to become a crucial part of Bafana Bafana's plans.

But right now, he's among Bafana's most influential players. Scoring his eighth international goal in the last 18 months, he's got another eight assists to his name - that's 16 goal contributions in 24 appearances.

He's been on fire lately, and it's not just the stats that show it. Against Panama on Friday, he created three chances for himself and his teammates in that 1-1 draw in Durban. At least one of those should've gone in, but that's just part of the game, right?

From Bishop Lavis to Bafana Stardom

Oswin Appollis, a teenage talent from Cape Town, grew up in the tough suburb of Bishop Lavis. He joined Ajax Cape Town's youth academy, showcasing his skills from a young age. In 2018, Appollis made the move to SuperSport United at just 17, marking a significant step in his football career.

Appollis made his Betway Premiership debut against Stellenbosch FC in 2019, just a few months after his 18th birthday, with then coach Kaitano Tembo giving him the nod. But things didn't quite take off as he'd hoped - the next three seasons were tough, with minimal appearances.

He played just five times as a sub for SuperSport, and had a loan spell at University of Pretoria in 2020/21, where he made 12 appearances (eight starts) and scored two goals. Not exactly the breakout he'd been looking for.

“He was the only one who called me at that time,” Appollis said. “He coached me in the MDC at SuperSport. When he found out I was home, he called and asked what was happening.

“I told him, and we spoke. He said, ‘This is what I want you to do: you must come back and play for me. One day, you’ll be at the (national) Under-23 and hopefully with Bafana.’ So, a big shout-out to him. I am grateful for what he has done for me.

“I think that’s one person I will never forget, because if it wasn’t for him, I don’t think I’d be here with Bafana and Orlando Pirates.

“The most important thing for me was the hunger to get back on the field and play. When I was at home, it wasn’t always easy, as people kept asking questions.”

A Career Relaunch

Appollis joined Pretoria Callies, then coached by Kopo, ahead of the 2022/23 season, and it was the move that turned his career around. He made 30 appearances (20 starts) and scored six goals, catching the eye of several clubs. Polokwane City, a top-flight team, took notice and made their move, snatching him up.

He became an instant regular at City and, over the next two seasons, a hugely influential part of their side. He made 60 appearances, with 56 starts, and scored eight goals from his left-wing position, which caught the eye of national team coach Hugo Broos.

He joined Orlando Pirates at the start of the 2025/26 season, helping them to MTN8 and Carling Knockout success, as well as a first genuine shot at a league title in many years.

A Less-Than-Forever Debut

Appollis made his international debut in a game that remains one of Bafana's poorer performances under Hugo Broos - the 2-0 loss to Rwanda in Butare in November 2023. There were extenuating circumstances around that match, but still not the ideal start for the young star.

He came on for Yaya Sithole after 75 minutes of that Rwanda match.

His second cap was in the Africa Cup of Nations bronze-medal match against DR Congo in February 2024.

He got his first start in the 3-3 draw with Algeria in March that year.

From June 2024, he became a regular in the Bafana Bafana squad.

His first goals came in the crucial 3-2 win over South Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Since then, he's scored eight times in 18 appearances.

Five of those goals have come in his last seven caps.

Nineteen of his 24 caps have been as a starter, including each of the last 10.

No other Bafana player has been as prolific in front of goal during that time.

A Man for All Positions

Appollis has spent much of his career on the left wing, but his versatility is a big plus for coach Broos. He played on the right against Panama on Friday to fit in Tshepang Moremi, and he can also play through the middle, giving Broos plenty of options.

At a World Cup, you need players who can cover several positions - in case of injuries or suspensions - and Appollis ticks that box big time

What's next for Appollis and South Africa?
