The Chicago Cubs have locked up their star second baseman Nico Hoerner with a massive six-year, $141 million contract extension, making it the fourth-largest deal in MLB history for a second baseman. This move comes after Hoerner's impressive 2025 season, where he batted .297 with seven home runs and 61 RBIs, earning him his second Gold Glove award.
Hoerner, 28, had a rough start to the 2026 season, going 0-for-4 at the plate with a run in Thursday's 10-4 loss to the Washington Nationals. Despite that, the Cubs are betting big on their talented infielder, who has proven himself to be one of the best defensive second basemen in the league.
The deal includes deferrals, which brings the current-day value of the contract into the mid-$130 million range. This is a smart move by the Cubs, as Hoerner was set to enter free agency after the 2026 season, and this extension ensures he'll be part of the team through 2030.
Hoerner has stolen at least 29 bases in each of the last three seasons and is a two-time Gold Glove Award winner.
Now in his eighth MLB season, Hoerner has been a Cub through and through, making his debut in 2019. Since 2021, he's consistently crushed it at the plate, with a batting average never dipping below .270.
Nico Hoerner’s deal with the Cubs is done and will be for six years and $141 million, sources tell ESPN. It’s the fourth-largest contract ever for a second baseman and locks up the 28-year-old into the 2030s. Defense, running, contact skill — Hoerner does everything well.

The Chicago Cubs have locked up their young star centerfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong with a six-year, $115 million extension, showcasing their commitment to their talented core. The deal, which kicks in next season, doesn't include any club options, ensuring Crow-Armstrong will be a Cub through 2032.
Crow-Armstrong, 24, had a breakout 2025 season, earning his first All-Star selection and Gold Glove award, while hitting .247/.287/.481 with 31 home runs and 95 RBIs. His impressive performance made him a top contender for the National League MVP award, finishing ninth in voting.
The Cubs will look to build on their momentum from this impressive signing as they take on the Washington Nationals in Game 2 of their three-game Opening Weekend series at Wrigley Field today, March 28th.
