Laporta wins second term as Barcelona president, set to lead club until 2031...
Joan Laporta has been re-elected as Barcelona's president, defeating Victor Font with a landslide victory, securing 68.18% of the votes. This win means Laporta will remain in charge of the Catalan giants until 2031. He'll officially reclaim his position in July after resigning a few weeks ago as part of the electoral process.
Laporta's re-election is seen as a vote of confidence in the club's current sporting structure, with Hansi Flick as manager and Deco as sporting director. The club has made significant progress, winning La Liga titles in 2023 and 2025, and reaching the Champions League semifinals last season. Laporta's focus now shifts to completing the redeveloped Camp Nou stadium and defending the club against external pressures.
Laporta is cruising to victory in the Barcelona club members' vote, with 68.47% of the counted votes (36,117) going his way, compared to Font's 29.52%. With only 12,363 votes left to count, his lead is basically unassailable.
The voter turnout was decent, with around 42% of Barcelona club members casting their votes, totaling 48,480. Laporta's likely to be declared the winner soon, given his massive lead.
Laporta was beaming with confidence, celebrating way before the votes were counted, and even got to dance with the Barca players after their thumping win at Camp Nou. He's clearly feeling optimistic about his re-election.
The 63-year-old lawyer has a track record of turning things around for Barca, having inherited a financial crisis in 2021. Despite the Messi departure, he's helped stabilize the club, and now looks set to continue leading the charge.
“We're sad, we were really hopeful, and it's a pity - we congratulate Laporta,” Font told reporters, admitting defeat.
Laporta's previous stint as Barcelona president (2003-2010) is remembered as the club's golden era, with Pep Guardiola's team winning the treble in 2009. He now returns for a second term, having won a decisive victory in the club elections.
Several Barcelona stars, including Hansi Flick's players, cast their votes after the team's 5-2 win over Sevilla. Laporta joined them at the ballot boxes, looking confident about his re-election. Would you like to know more about his plans for the club?
Some big names were spotted casting their votes, including former Barca midfielder Sergio Busquets, women's Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati, and ex-player Xavi Hernandez. Voting was open to club members, with booths set up at Camp Nou and other locations in Catalonia, as well as Andorra.
Laporta made some big moves in 2022, selling off future TV rights and parts of the club to fund signings like Lewandowski and Raphinha - a move that raised eyebrows. But it seems to be paying off, with Barca winning LaLiga titles in 2023 and 2025.

Under Hansi Flick, Barca's also made a strong return to the Champions League semis, their best run since 2019. Laporta's re-election suggests members are backing his strategy.
Laporta faced criticism for teaming up with Real Madrid's Florentino Perez on the European Super League project, which ultimately failed. Barca pulled out of it earlier this year, but the damage was done.
During his first stint as president (2003-2010), Laporta oversaw a golden era: Ronaldinho joined, Messi emerged, and Barca won two Champions Leagues (2006, 2009).
