Takehiro Tomiyasu, the Japanese defender, has withdrawn from Japan's friendlies against Scotland and England due to injury, putting his World Cup hopes in jeopardy. The 27-year-old was called up for the first time in almost two years, but this injury means he won't get a chance to play for his country before the World Cup squad is announced.
Tomiyasu had started for Ajax against Feyenoord on Sunday, but was substituted in the 73rd minute due to discomfort. He posted on Instagram, saying it was “part of a process” and “haste makes waste. Do what you need to do.”
Injury Update
Tomiyasu started for Ajax against Feyenoord, but things took a turn when he signalled discomfort and was subbed off in the 73rd minute. Not the best way to get minutes, but he's taking it in stride.
The Japanese defender took to Instagram to downplay the injury, saying it's “part of a process.” Guess we'll have to wait and see how long he'll be out for.
“Haste makes waste. Do what you need to do,” he wrote.
Japan's upcoming friendlies are crucial, with Scotland on Saturday in Glasgow, followed by England at Wembley on Tuesday. They're looking to fine-tune for the World Cup, where they'll face Netherlands, Tunisia, and an as-yet unknown European qualifier in Group F.
The stakes are high, with the World Cup starting June 11th in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
Tomiyasu left Arsenal last year to focus on his recovery, with a year left on his contract. He joined Ajax in December and made his return in January, but hasn't yet played a full 90 minutes for his new club.
