UCL Home Record

The Lilywhites have impressive home form in the UCL, winning all four games in 2025/26 with 10 goals scored and none conceded, despite struggling in the Premier League.

Team Changes

Igor Tudor made three changes to the starting XI that faced Atleti, with Vicario, Dragusin, and Simons replacing Richarlison (suspended), Danso, and Kinsky.

Tottenham Hotspur salvaged some pride with a 3-2 win over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League Round of 16 second leg, despite being knocked out 7-5 on aggregate. Igor Tudor's side had an uphill battle after losing 5-2 in the first leg, but they showed fight and energy, with Randal Kolo Muani scoring early and Xavi Simons netting a penalty and a brilliant curling strike.

The win marks a turnaround in form for Spurs, who had lost their first four games under Tudor, conceding 14 goals. Their battling performance against Liverpool last weekend showed signs of improvement, and Tudor praised his team's spirit and commitment. Atletico Madrid will face Barcelona in the quarter-finals.

With Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven solid in central defence, Spurs had a glimmer of hope to turn things around if they scored early.

The Spaniards settled quickly, but Spurs were in their stride by the 20-minute mark, with Mathys Tel's three shots on target lifting the stadium's mood.

Kolo Muani Sparks Tottenham Hope

The 20-year-old Frenchman played a pivotal role in Tottenham's breakthrough, delivering a pinpoint, sublime cross that Randal Kolo Muani powered home with a decisive header beyond Juan Musso. Having controlled 66% of possession in the 15 minutes leading up to the goal, the opener was a fair reflection of the hosts' dominance and pressure.

Nahuel Molina's four tackles, the highest tally of any player up to that point and Juan Musso's five first-half saves underscored just how firmly Tottenham held the upper hand throughout the opening period.

Xavi Simons was on fire, contesting 14 one-on-ones (winning 9) and completing 4 successful dribbles from 6 attempts. He was always gonna impact the game.

Tel had another great chance to double the lead, but shot straight at Musso. He kept testing the Atleti keeper, who responded well. Atletico hit back with late first-half chances, cooling the home crowd's mood.

Atleti's Sucker Punch

Alvarez killed the mood, scoring the equaliser with time and space despite being surrounded by 7 Spurs players, after the Dutchman (likely a Spurs player) felt he should've got a free-kick.

Alvarez scored his 8th goal in the tournament, a new record for the Argentine. He had 3 shots on target, half of Atletico's total for the game.

To Spurs' credit, they showed real resilience and refused to fold. Just five minutes later, Xavi Simons produced a moment of magic, rifling a superb strike past the helpless dive of Juan Musso.

Atlético Madrid's clear vulnerability in this season's Champions League has been the quarter-hour immediately following half-time. This concession marked their seventh goal shipped in that 46th-to-60th-minute window only Newcastle, with eight, have been more porous during those crucial post-interval moments.

Midfield Dominance

Pape Matar Sarr and Archie Gray controlled the midfield with authority, effortlessly distributing the ball (registering 88.2% and 88.4% pass completion respectively). Their composure repeatedly carved out openings, allowing players like Pedro Porro and others to unleash shots on goal.

By the 60-minute mark, the hosts had already fired off 13 attempts, an impressive 11 of which were on target

Gritty Win Secured

Spence, Van de Ven, and Romero won 11 duels and possession back 11 times. Spurs committed 12 fouls with 20 minutes left, showing grit and determination under Tudor.

However, just when it seemed the North Londoners were gaining the upper hand and momentum, their resurgence was swiftly halted by a straightforward near-post header from Dávid Hancko off a corner.
That goal extinguished any lingering hopes of a dramatic turnaround and proved to be the first of nine unanswered shots by the visitors during the second half.

In the dying moments, Tottenham earned a late penalty, which Xavi Simons stepped up to convert with composure. Though the victory felt somewhat hollow in the broader context, it succeeded in rallying the Spurs supporters, who rose together to applaud their team's grit and determination.

Only time will tell whether this marks the beginning of a genuine turnaround for the North London side under Igor Tudor's leadership...
