FC Koln sack Lukas Kwasniok, Rene Wagner takes over as interim coach to lead relegation fight...

FC Koln has parted ways with head coach Lukas Kwasniok, marking the 10th major coaching change for the three-time German champions in 10 years. This decision comes after a 3-3 draw at home against Rhine derby rivals Borussia Moenchengladbach, leaving Koln just two points clear of St Pauli in the relegation playoff spot with only seven matches remaining.

Assistant coach Rene Wagner has been appointed as interim head coach, and there's speculation that Friedhelm Funkel, known for rescuing struggling teams, could take over permanently. Kwasniok, who joined from Paderborn last summer, had a contract until 2028, but a recent dip in form ultimately cost him his job.

Lukas Kwasniok, the Polish-born manager, was let go by FC Cologne after a dip in form, despite being appointed last June to lead the promoted side. This marks the 10th coaching change for the three-time German champions in 10 years, highlighting the club's struggle to find continuity since Peter Stoger's departure in 2017. Only Steffen Baumgart has lasted more than two seasons in the dugout during that period.

“Despite the passionate and stable performances, there was a clear downward trend in our development to be seen. We have ‌picked up too few points – that is the reality,” managing ‌director Thomas Kessler said in a press release.

Rene Wagner has been appointed as interim head coach, taking charge of FC Koln's upcoming fixtures.
