Kenya vs Estonia, Late drama, penalties, and a 1-1 draw - match highlights...

Kenya's Harambee Stars suffered a heartbreaking 5-4 penalty shootout defeat to Estonia in their FIFA Series opener at Amahoro Stadium in Rwanda.

The match had ended 1-1 in normal time, setting the stage for the tense penalty shootout. Kenya's hopes were high as Austin Odhiambo scored the opener, but Richard Odada's miss shifted the momentum. Lawrence Ouma, Erastus Erambo, and Ben Omondi kept Kenya in it, but substitute Mohammed Bajaber's miss ultimately sealed their fate.

The first half started slow, with both teams feeling each other out. Kenya started strong, maintaining possession and trying to create attacks, but couldn't quite break through.

Kenya Presses High Early

With only 10 minutes played, Kenya continued to press high up the pitch, maintaining ball possession but struggling to create clear-cut chances. Estonia, meanwhile, seemed comfortable starting the game defensively, soaking up pressure.

However, it was Estonia who took the lead against the run of play. A move initiated from the right wing ended up giving Estonia their first corner of the game. Kristo Hussar delivered the resultant corner-kick which Tanel Tammik rose the highest to head home into the back of the net.

The goal piled pressure on Kenya with midfielder Richard Odada being booked for a clumsy foul in the 30th minute. Five minutes later, Harambee Stars almost levelled the scores when Job Ochieng received a pass up front and managed a powerful shot, but Andre Karl Vallner palled it away despite the offside call.

Kenya were forced into an early change in the 40th minute when Job Ochieng pulled an injury, and was replaced by Ben Omondi. Kenya kept pressing for the equaliser, and in the 45th minute, debutant Zech Obiero of Tranmere Rovers had a superb opportunity, but he shot straight at Vallner. Despite Kenya’s dominance, Estonia went into the half-time break leading 1-0.

Harambee Stars started the second period on a high and it took them 10 minutes to level the scores.

Ogam's Chip Levels Scores — Post-Equalisation Push

In a series of passes in the attack, Obiero found the ball between the defenders to Ryan Ogam, who came face to face with the goalkeeper, before chipping the ball over Vallner and into the back of the net.

After the goal, Kenya launched another attack, trying to create danger for the Estonian defence and attempt to turn the score around. Estonia had been unable to penetrate the attacking third, suffering under pressure and even coming close to conceding the second goal.

Kenya made a double change - Obiero, Omar, and Wilson being replaced by Austin Odhiambo, Erastus Erambo, and Lawrence Ouma, while Estonia’s Poom and Mannilaan were replaced by Alex Matthias Tamm and Markus Soomets.

Goalscorer for Kenya, Ogam was later
replaced by Mohammed Bajaber, who plays for Tanzania Mainland Premier League giants Simba SC, while Estonia withdrew Patrik Kristal for Karel Mustmaa.

The FIFA Series was approved by the FIFA Council in December 2022 and is fully aligned with FIFA’s Strategic Objectives for the Global Game: 2023-27.

The 2026 edition of this initiative will feature 48 national teams – representing almost a quarter of FIFA’s 211 Member Associations – competing in 12 groups of four teams each.

Kenya are using the Series as part of their preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania will host the 36th edition from June 19th to July 18th.
