Aston Villa secured a 2-0 victory over West Ham United, achieving a head-to-head double over the Hammers for the first time since 2010/11, and significantly boosting their chances of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.

West Ham's pre-match woes began with Jean-Clair Todibo's warm-up injury, but Mads Hermansen's impressive save and Konstatinos Mavropanos' crucial header helped the visitors avoid early setbacks.

The home crowd at Villa Park was given reason to celebrate on the quarter-hour mark. Matty Cash played a free-kick short to Jadon Sancho, who played a perfectly-weighted pass for John McGinn to effortlessly stroke a first-time effort in from the edge of the box, scoring the opening goal.

Taty Castellanos and Amadou Onana had chances to score at either end shortly after the opener, with both players heading wide of the target. Aston Villa continued to push for a second goal, with Ollie Watkins striking wide and then setting up Morgan Rogers for a shot that was well saved by Mads Hermansen.

Morgan Rogers continued to cause problems for West Ham's defense, with his shot being blocked by Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The Villans were cutting through the visitors with ease, and Rogers was denied again by a miraculous header from Konstatinos Mavropanos on the line.

Mavropanos, the Greece international, got his body in the way yet again to deflect an Ollie Watkins shot wide. The Villa defender was having a solid game, and it was his clearance that helped the team stay ahead. Ezri Konsa then had a chance to score just before the break, but his header bounced over the crossbar.

Nuno Espirito Santo responded to the first-half pressure by making a double change ahead of the restart, bringing fresh legs and ideas to the Hammers' attack. However, the hosts continued to dictate the pace of the game, with Mads Hermansen being forced to tip a venomous Ross Barkley strike over the crossbar. Matty Cash came agonisingly close to scoring from range moments later, but his effort was just off target.

The Hammers started to create openings of their own as the half progressed, with the Villa defense being tested on several occasions. Matues Fernandes had a chance to score, but his effort was blocked by Lucas Digne. Emiliano Martinez was equal to Axel Disasi's header, and Ezri Konsa got his head in the way of Jarrod Bowen's effort, keeping the score at 1-0.

Pablo Marcar scored a goal, no, he blazed his shot over the crossbar, a moment of agony for the player. The disappointment from that effort was compounded when Mads Hermansen unconvincingly parried Morgan Rogers' shot, and Aston Villa were gifted a second goal as Ollie Watkins pounced to finish the rebound.

Tammy Abraham had one last chance to add to Villa's tally, but his audacious attempt in the final moments trickled harmlessly wide. It didn't matter, though - the work had long been done, and Aston Villa had secured a vital 2-0 win over West Ham. The victory ended their four-game winless run in the Premier League and allowed them to capitalize on teams around them dropping points. Villa are now within one point of third-placed Manchester United and five points clear of Liverpool.
