The coach who guided Denmark to a historic victory over Canada's hockey team is set to depart at the conclusion of the season.
Mikael Gath is stepping down from his role as head coach of Denmark's national ice hockey team following this season, having accepted an offer to lead a club in a major international league, according to a press release from the Danish Ice Hockey Federation.
“It has been an incredible journey to lead the Danish national team. Together with the players and staff, we have experienced some fantastic moments and created results that I will always be proud to have been a part of", says Mikael Gath in the press release, where he also focuses on the upcoming World Cup Championship finals in May.
“The World Championships in Switzerland will be a big and important task for us, and my full focus is on gathering the team and preparing ourselves as best as possible for the tournament,” he says.
The Danish Ice Hockey Union is starting the search for a new head coach, following Gath's departure. Under Gath, Denmark had notable successes, including a World Championship semi-final appearance in 2025 after beating Canada, and qualifying for the Milan Winter Olympics. The federation is now looking to find a replacement to lead the team forward.
“Mikael has had a great impact on the national team during a period when we have taken important sporting steps. The World Championship semi-final in 2025 and participation in the Olympics in 2026 are results that we are very proud of,” says elite manager of the Danish Ice Hockey Federation, Morten Green.
