Chase Johnston leads high point to historic NCAA win

No. 16 High Point shocks No. 5 Wisconsin 83-82 in thrilling NCAA tournament debut. Chase Johnston's heroics lead Panthers to historic win.

“It looks pretty obvious to me that high majors need to play mid majors during the season...”

High Point stunned Wisconsin with a strong start, taking a 3-0 lead behind Owen Aquino's early three-pointer. But the Badgers quickly turned things around, building a double-digit lead before the first media timeout.

Despite trailing, High Point stayed calm and continued to share the ball, cutting Wisconsin's lead to just two points at halftime. Chase Johnston's heroic night was keeping the Panthers in it.

Chase Johnston's Electric Three

High Point kept Wisconsin on their toes in the second half, refusing to let the No. 5 Badgers pull away. The lead stayed narrow, and the Panthers were still in it.

With under five minutes left, Wisconsin looked like they were taking control with an eight-point lead... but then, a High Point hero emerged, and the game was back on.

Chase Johnston dropped a bombshell from beyond half court, a three-pointer from the March Madness logo that cut Wisconsin's lead to five. The Panthers were alive again.

That jaw-dropping shot sparked High Point, and suddenly the game was back on. Johnston's NBA-caliber three-pointer was the turning point.

Chase Johnston is a three-point wizard, entering the game with a ridiculous 48.5% clip from beyond the arc. He dropped four more threes against Wisconsin, keeping High Point in it.

But Johnston's game-winning shot wasn't a three - it was something else.

In his final collegiate season, Chase Johnston was a three-point machine, but struggled inside the arc (0-for-4 from two-point range). Yet, when it mattered most, he rose to the occasion.

Johnston's game-winning heroics weren't fueled by threes this time.

Chase Johnston broke a scoreless drought from two-point range with the biggest layup of his career. Down 81-82, he took a pass, scored on a breakaway, and gave High Point a one-point lead.

High Point's Historic Upset

Badgers' chance slips away: Owen Aquino's block of Nick Boyd's layup seals 83-82 win for High Point, marking their first NCAA tournament victory.

“It's tough to even put into words what just happened,” said Head Coach Flynn Clayman. “I couldn't be prouder of this team. In the summer, when we get those shot tracker numbers back, and there are 63 schools in the country that have it, and we're number one every week in attempts, they can talk about whatever we have, but we're working. We're selfless… and we're not just here to win one game, we're here to get to the sweet 16.”

High Point entered the NCAA tournament with a 27-4 record and Big South Conference crown. As 10.5-point underdogs against Wisconsin, they proved they belonged, pulling off a stunning 83-82 upset.

“It looks pretty obvious to me that high majors need to play mid majors during the season because they said we ain’t played nobody,” said Clayman. “We played somebody now.” High Point will face No. 4 Arkansas on Saturday in the round of 32.
