Australia's Nestory Irankunda scored a thrilling second-half double, leading his team to a 5-1 thrashing of Curacao in a friendly match in Melbourne. This impressive win serves as a sweet farewell for fans before the Socceroos head overseas to continue their World Cup buildup.


Irankunda, a livewire forward, struck twice in a five-minute burst from the 80th minute, helping Australia run riot with four goals after the break against the smallest country to qualify for the World Cup finals. Jordy Bos and Alessandro Circati also grabbed second-half goals, while Curacao's Arjany Martha scored for the visitors on the 50th minute, cancelling out Awer Mabil's 23rd-minute strike.

Socceroos Find Form After Shaky Start

Australia looked disjointed in the first half, struggling to transition forward and relying on keeper Mat Ryan to make crucial saves. But they took the lead in the 23rd minute through a fortunate goal. Kai Trewin's forward press led to a loose pass from Curacao's Leandro Bacuna, and a chain of events involving Deni Juric and a defender's deflection allowed Awer Mabil to poke the ball home. The Socceroos settled after that, going on to win 2-1.


Mat Ryan made a crucial save just before halftime when Jeremy Antonisse's low shot was headed his way, courtesy of a through ball from Leandro Bacuna. The Socceroos had a chance to double their lead in the 43rd minute, but Awer Mabil's volley hit the right post after a long cross from Hrustic.


Curacao came out strong in the second half, and their energy paid off in the 50th minute. Substitute Gervane Kastaneer headed the ball to Arjany Martha, who beat Australia's goalkeeper Mat Ryan with a low shot. But Australia responded 17 minutes later, with Alessandro Circati scoring his first international goal, heading in a curling cross from Riley McGree.


Jordy Bos scored a beauty, curling in a right-footed shot, adding to his goal against Cameroon. Substitute Nestory Irankunda sealed the win with a dazzling finish, using quick feet to beat defender Jurien Gaari before smashing a fierce shot that deflected off keeper Eloy Room and rolled into the net.


Irankunda scored again four minutes later, sealing his brace with a crisp finish into the left corner and sparking another roar from the home crowd. Australia's World Cup campaign kicks off on June 13 against either Kosovo or Turkey, who face off in a playoff later this week.
