Sara Hector and Thea Louise Stjernesund tie for silver in women's giant slalom at 2026 Winter Olympics.

“It's like they say, feelings are better when they are shared...”

Sweden's Sara Hector was overjoyed to share the silver medal with Norway's Thea Louise Stjernesund in the women's giant slalom at the Milano Cortina Olympics. The two skiers posted identical times in the first run, leaving them tied for second place.

Hector and Stjernesund showed that even old rivals can share a special moment, with the Swedish skier saying it was "one in a million” to share the medal with her Norwegian counterpart.

Sweden's Sara Hector and Norway's Thea Louise Stjernesund made history by sharing the silver medal in the women's giant slalom event, clocking identical times in both runs. This rare occurrence has left many in awe, with Hector describing the odds as “one in a million.”

Federica Brignone, the Italian skier, took home the gold medal, dominating the first run and maintaining her lead in the second. This win marks Brignone's second gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics, following her super-G victory earlier in the Games.

Sara Hector and Thea Louise Stjernesund shared the silver medal with a thrilling performance, initially tied with Italian-born Lara Colturi, who represents Albania, for the top spot after the first run. However, Federica Brignone shattered their time, leaving them waiting anxiously for their fate.

In the second run, Hector and Stjernesund were neck-and-neck again, with Brignone ultimately securing gold and pushing them to share silver. A nail-biter to the end.

“I remember Sara asked me after the second run 'did you feel as bad as I did?',” said Stjernesund with a smile. “And I was, like, yeah.”

“So I think we also ‌did not just ski the same but we shared the same feeling while we skied. So it was in one way fun that it turned out to be a bit like us against the others.”

Sara Hector and Thea Louise Stjernesund shared a heartwarming moment, kneeling together in mock reverence to Federica Brignone at the medal ceremony, after tying for silver in the women's giant slalom. Hector described sharing the silver as “cool,” highlighting the camaraderie between the Swedish and Norwegian skiers.

“We win together, for sure,” said Hector. “It's like they say, feelings are better when they are shared.”

Sweden and Norway are neck-and-neck in Alpine skiing, with each country securing one medal. However, in cross-country skiing, Norway is dominating, especially in men's events, and is currently leading the medal count. In fact, Norway's Johannes Klaebo has made history by winning his ninth gold medal in cross-country skiing, solidifying Norway's top spot.

“In Alpine skiing, it's very ‌like camaraderie, we have such a nice atmosphere here,” said Hector.
