NBA Roundup: Pistons Top East, Knicks & Celtics Chase

Cade Cunningham
Pistons lead charge in East, Spurs & Thunder dominate West

NBA action heats up: Detroit Pistons lead East, Jose Alvarado makes history in Knicks' win, Oklahoma City Thunder & San Antonio Spurs dominate West.

“Every time he gets an opportunity it's quick twitch and ready to go...”

Cade Cunningham led the Detroit Pistons to a 113-95 win over the Toronto Raptors, scoring 28 points, despite the absence of Jalen Duren and Isaiah Stewart, who were suspended for their role in a brawl against the Charlotte Hornets. Cunningham's impressive performance included 7 rebounds, 9 assists, and 3 steals, with 6 of 11 3-point attempts made.

Paul Reed stepped up in the absence of Duren and Stewart, scoring 22 points, grabbing 5 rebounds, and blocking 4 shots. Tobias Harris added 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Duncan Robinson contributed 13 points. For the Raptors, Immanuel Quickley scored 18 points, Scottie Barnes had 17, and RJ Barrett added 16.

Detroit's dominant performance in Toronto wasn't hindered by the absence of key centers. The Pistons' balanced offense led to a comfortable win, with Paul Reed stepping up big time with 22 points.

Reed's effort, combined with Duncan Robinson's 13 points and Tobias Harris's 12, made up for the missing duo. The team's overall performance overshadowed the absence, securing a wire-to-wire victory.

Pistons coach JB Bickerstaff heaped praise on Paul Reed, saying he's “seamlessly” slotted into the starting lineup. “He's been great for us,” Bickerstaff said, highlighting Reed's readiness to step up.

Reed delivered, scoring 22 points, grabbing 5 rebounds, and blocking 4 shots. His performance was a big factor in Detroit's 113-95 win over the Raptors.

“Basketball is what he eats, sleeps, bleeds,” Bickerstaff said. “Every time he gets an opportunity it's quick twitch and ready to go. I've never seen a guy who prepares himself every day like he's gonna start and play 48 minutes.”

Detroit's 113-95 win over the Raptors puts them top of the Eastern Conference with a 40-13 record heading into the NBA All-Star break. The Pistons are looking strong.

Eastern Conference Update

The Boston Celtics moved to 35-19, 5.5 games behind league leaders Detroit, after beating the Chicago Bulls 124-105. Payton Pritchard scored 26 points off the bench, while Jaylen Brown added 24 to spark the win.

The New York Knicks bounced back from a surprise loss to Indiana with a 138-89 thrashing of the Philadelphia 76ers, keeping them in third place in the East. The Knicks' dominant performance puts them hot on the heels of Boston, which is 5.5 games behind league-leading Detroit.

Julius Randle led the charge with 28 points, while Jalen Brunson and Donte DiVincenzo added 24 and 23 points, respectively. The Knicks' big win sets them up nicely for the All-Star break.

The Knicks dominated the 76ers, leading by as much as 52 points in the fourth quarter, and cruised to a 138-89 win. Jose Alvarado's bench cameo was the highlight, scoring 26 points with 8 threes and 5 steals, making NBA history in the process.

Alvarado's stats were insane: 8/13 from 3-point range, 5 steals, and he led the scoring. Mikal Bridges added 22 points, Karl-Anthony Towns 21, while Tyrese Maxey top-scored for Philly with 32.

Cleveland Cavaliers extended their winning streak to 5 games, thrashing Washington Wizards 138-113. Donovan Mitchell led the charge with 30 points, keeping the Cavs fourth in the East.

In the West, Minnesota Timberwolves' Julius Randle scored 41 points in a 133-109 win over Portland Trail Blazers. The T-Wolves are looking strong.

Oklahoma City Thunder maintained their Western Conference lead, thrashing Phoenix Suns 136-109. Jalen Williams led the charge with 28 points, filling the gap left by injured Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

San Antonio Spurs kept the pressure on, beating Golden State Warriors 126-113 for their 6th straight win. The Spurs (38-16) remain Oklahoma City's closest rivals in the West.

The Spurs turned the game around, outscoring the Warriors 32-19 in the 4th quarter to win 126-113. De'Aaron Fox led the charge with 27 points, while Victor Wembanyama added 26. The Spurs' 6-game win streak continues.
