Morikawa Edges Scheffler in Pebble Beach Thriller
Collin Morikawa holds off Scottie Scheffler's late charge to win the Pebble Beach Pro-Am by a stroke.
“We just started telling people this week, and we said, 'what better way...”
Collin Morikawa edged out Scottie Scheffler in a thrilling finish at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The top-ranked Scheffler launched a stunning comeback with three eagles, but Morikawa held his nerve to claim the win.
Morikawa, a double major winner, hadn't tasted victory on the PGA Tour since 2023. He started the day in joint-second and birdied the final hole in tough conditions to snatch the title by a stroke.
“It's special for a lot of reasons,” said Morikawa, who used his win to announce that he and his wife are expecting their first child.
“We just started telling people this week, and we said, 'what better way... to just announce it to the world, if I was able to come out and win,'” he said.
Morikawa was flying high in his home state, pulling clear of the pack with clutch birdies on 15 and 16. But the conditions turned gusty, and he suffered a bogey on 17 after hooking his tee shot into the rough.
The tension was palpable as Morikawa waited on the 18th fairway, watching Jacob Bridgeman's bizarre shot from the beach ricochet off a cliff and into the ocean - talk about a nail-biter.
A birdie on 18 sealed the deal for Morikawa, edging out Min Woo Lee and Sepp Straka by a single stroke. Scheffler and Tommy Fleetwood finished a shot further back, in joint-fourth.
“I tried to look out in the ocean as many times as I can. I love being out here,” said Morikawa, of the delay.
“Pebble Beach... not many places can beat this place in the world.”
Scheffler's charge fell short as he missed long on four straight holes, dropping shots on two of them. But he bounced back with an eagle to finish with a 63 and 20 under, tied for the lead.
The winds picked up just as Scheffler finished, making it tough for the remaining players. A valiant effort, but not quite enough to catch Morikawa.
World number one Scottie Scheffler delivered the day's best round, storming up the leaderboard from joint 22nd, eight shots off the lead. He started sizzling, with two eagles and three birdies in his first seven holes.
Min Woo Lee was on fire with a 65, birdying the final two holes to put pressure on the leaders. What a turnaround from Saturday's heartbreak, when he bogeyed the last two holes and tossed his ball into the Pacific
Lee's chasing his second PGA Tour win, and he's making a statement.
“Anytime you've got three eagles in one round, good things are happening... Proud of the way I played today,” said Scheffler.
Rory McIlroy was solid with a 64 in the final round, but his earlier struggles - three doubles and a triple bogey - kept him out of contention. Defending champ, no title defense this time.

Morikawa's major wins are a 2020 PGA Championship and a 2021 Open Championship. After a dry spell, he kicked off this season with a bang at Pebble Beach, bouncing back from a missed cut at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

“I wish I could have those four holes back this week. I played 68 really good ones,” said McIlroy.
“But all in all, some really good stuff this week. Pretty encouraged going into next week for sure,” added the world number two.
