Bah nets comeback goal over a year

Jose Mourinho praises Bah's stunning comeback goal in Benfica's win. Alexander Bah scores on return from ACL injury as Benfica beats AFS 3-0 in Liga Portugal.

“I was more than happy with Bah. I had doubts about whether to start him or whether he should come on as a substitute...”

Alexander Bah made a sensational return to the pitch, scoring a goal in Benfica's 3-0 win over AFS in Liga Portugal. The Danish international hadn't played in over a year, having suffered a serious knee injury in February 2025. José Mourinho, Benfica's manager, praised Bah's performance, saying he was “more than happy” with his contribution.

Bah started the game and scored the opening goal in the 11th minute, sparking enthusiastic celebrations from his teammates. Mourinho had considered starting Bah from the bench but ultimately decided to give him a full start. “I had doubts about whether to start him or whether he should come on as a substitute,” Mourinho said.

After the match, coach Jose Mourinho praised Bah for his performance:

“I was more than happy with Bah. I had doubts about whether to start him or whether he should come on as a substitute. But took responsibility himself and said that 90 minutes would be a lot in the end, but coming on for 20 or 25 minutes would be too little. So we decided that he should start and play as long as he could,” Mourinho said, according to Portuguese media A Bola.

Alexander Bah, 28, was part of Benfica's squad for the Champions League playoff first leg against Real Madrid, but he didn't make an appearance in the match, which Benfica lost 1-0 at home. The match was marred by a racism row involving Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr.

On February 8, 2025, Alexander Bah suffered a devastating injury, tearing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee during Benfica's home game against Moreirense. He left the field in the 34th minute, marking the start of a long and arduous recovery journey.
