Bayern's Hoeness raps Liverpool's squad

Bayern Munich's Uli Hoeness criticizes Liverpool for poor integration of Florian Wirtz, saying they have too many superstars.

“They spent €500m and are having a disastrous season, in my opinion, that’s because they only have superstars...”

Bayern Munich's board member and former president, Uli Hoeness, has slammed Liverpool for their handling of Florian Wirtz, saying the club is having a “disastrous season” because they only have superstars and no team players. Hoeness believes Wirtz, who joined Liverpool for £116m, isn't getting the ball enough due to the individualism of players like Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Wirtz has struggled to adapt to the Premier League, but showed promise in Liverpool's recent win over West Ham, where he played a crucial role in creating chances. Hoeness thinks Wirtz would have thrived at Bayern, where the team dynamic is more cohesive.

Hoeness's criticism comes as Liverpool faces challenges in integrating Wirtz into their squad, with some suggesting the club's squad is too star-studded and lacks teamwork. Despite this, Wirtz's performance against West Ham suggests he could become a key player for Liverpool.

Liverpool ended their disappointing run with a 2-0 win over West Ham, thanks to goals from Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo. Florian Wirtz, returning from injury, played a crucial role in the victory, impressing with his performance.

Bayern Munich is still smarting from losing Wirtz to Liverpool, with board member Uli Hoeneß criticizing the Reds' season, saying they've spent €500m and are having a “disastrous season” with too many superstars and not enough workers. Hoeneß believes Wirtz would have thrived at Bayern, given the ideal conditions, unlike at Liverpool where he's struggling to adapt.

Uli Hoeness didn't mince words when discussing Liverpool's struggles, particularly with Florian Wirtz's integration. At an event in Munich, he expressed his disappointment that Wirtz chose Liverpool over Bayern, saying the German champions would've provided ideal conditions for his success.

“Slot obviously promised him something, which he in no way keeps. He promised him that he would get shirt number 10 and they would build a new team around him. It's nonsense. He got number 7, and they don't play around Florian Wirtz at all.”

“I feel terribly sorry for Wirtz. He received every ball in Leverkusen. In Liverpool, he gets five balls in a half, and if he loses two, he gets a bad grade,” says Uli Hoeness, according to the German media SID.

According to Bild, Hoeness said further: “They spent €500m and are having a disastrous season, in my opinion, that’s because they only have superstars. They only have chiefs and no workers.”

Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised Florian Wirtz's performance against West Ham, saying he was impressed by the German's display. “He was excellent, wasn't he? He played a really good game,” Slot said, highlighting Wirtz's impact on the game.

“We tried to create an extra midfielder, and he was very important for us in finding that. He was good when he made a dribble; he was really good in his one-touch balls. We had many promising moments, and he was part of many of those, I think. A good game.”
