Orlando Pirates has confirmed the transfer of defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi to Chicago Fire, a Major League Soccer (MLS) club. The 20-year-old centre-back has completed his medical and finalized terms with the MLS club, paving the way for his move to the United States.

Mbokazi, who has been a key player for Orlando Pirates, will join Chicago Fire on a four-year deal, running up to 2029, with an option to extend by a further year. He will occupy a U-22 Initiative roster slot and is expected to strengthen the team's back line.

Chicago Fire's Director of Football and Head Coach, Gregg Berhalter, expressed excitement about Mbokazi's arrival, citing his high potential, leadership, and competitiveness on the international level. Mbokazi has earned five caps with the South African national team and helped the country qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He's expected to be available for Saturday's Carling Knockout final against Marumo Gallants, which will be his last game in a Pirates shirt. The deal is reportedly worth around $3-million (R51-million).

“Orlando Pirates Football Club can confirm that it has reached an agreement with Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire for the transfer of defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi,” the Soweto giants said in a statement.

“Following positive discussions between the management of both clubs, it has been agreed that Mbokazi will remain with Orlando Pirates until the final official fixture of 2025.”

Chicago Fire confirmed the move, stating that Mbokazi will “occupy a U-22 initiative slot and an international roster position, and his contract will run through 2029, with a Club option for the 2029/30 season.”

Mbokazi is expected to join his new club after the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, with the final set for 18 January.

“We are excited to welcome Mbekezeli to the Club as we further strengthen our back line,” said Chicago Fire FC Director of Football and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter.

“In his young career, he has already shown high potential and proven himself to be a strong leader and competitor on the international level. We expect immediate impact and room to grow in future.”
