Mainz's struggles continue as they suffered a 1-0 home loss to Borussia Monchengladbach, extending their winless run at home in the Bundesliga. The defeat leaves them bottom of the table, still searching for their first league win at home this season.

Gladbach had the early pressure, with Jens Castrop's 16th-minute effort forcing a crucial clearance off the line by Mainz defender Maxim Leitsch. Mainz goalkeeper Daniel Batz, making his first appearance since December 2023, was tested early on.

Mainz thought they'd gotten a quick goal back, but it was ruled out. Luca Netz's delivery from a corner was headed on by Kevin Diks, and Leitsch unfortunately put it into his own net. However, VAR intervened, and the goal was disallowed due to a handball by Yannik Engelhardt. The decision was harsh, given the minimal contact with Engelhardt's arm.

Mainz's struggles in attack were evident, failing to muster a single shot on or off target before half-time. It was clear they were struggling to create chances, and the lack of goals was a concern.

Mainz interim boss Benjamin Hoffmann stuck with the same lineup at halftime, but it didn't pay off. Just three minutes into the second half, Nelson Weiper had a golden opportunity to score, but his shot was tame and easily saved by Moritz Nicolas.

Gladbach continued to threaten, with Jens Castrop having another chance, only to be denied by Daniel Batz's superb save. The break finally came when Haris Tabakovic's header hit Danny da Costa and went in, handing Gladbach the lead.

Weiper had another chance, but his header from Lee Jae-sung's cross flew wide of the target, leaving him frustrated. Gladbach continued to press, and Daniel Batz made a crucial save to deny Shuto Machino, securing a hard-fought 1-0 win.

The victory lifts Gladbach into the top half, while Mainz remains rock-bottom, still waiting for a first home league win. Mainz's winless run stretches to nine games (D2, L7), and they'll face a tough test against Bayern Munich next Sunday. Gladbach, meanwhile, host Wolfsburg next Saturday.
