Spain battled past Czech Republic to maintain their perfect Nations League record.

La Roja tightened their grip on top spot in UEFA Nations League Group A3 with a hard-earned 3-1 home win over the Czechs, stretching their record-breaking unbeaten run in 90 minutes to 41 games (W31, D10).

Back in Oviedo for a home international for the first time in 11 years, Luis de la Fuente’s side were heavy favourites against a Czech Republic team that arrived winless in their last five matches (D1, L4).

True to form, Spain flew out of the traps and their early dominance was rewarded in the sixth minute, when Lamine Yamal curled a stunning 18-yard effort into the far corner to score for the third game in a row for La Roja.

Yamal’s moment of brilliance set the tone for a dominant opening 20 minutes, with Dani Olmo seeing a close-range strike brilliantly blocked before Antonin Kinsky twice stood tall to deny Alex Baena and Pedri in quick succession.

Having conceded at least twice in four of their previous five internationals, Santi Denia’s side looked to halt the hosts’ momentum as the first half wore on.

There was no stopping the rampant hosts, however, who doubled their advantage on 35 minutes when Rodri pounced on a loose ball in the area and fired an unstoppable finish into the top corner.

De la Fuente made a double change at the break, handing key attackers Lamine Yamal and Baena a well-earned rest ahead of Tuesday’s meeting with Croatia.

Despite the changes, Spain stayed in full control early in the second half, with Roberto Fernandez seeing a low effort kept out by Kinsky.

The visitors refused to go down without a fight, however, and their persistence paid off in the 69th minute when Adam Hlozek teed up Jiri Slama to drill into the bottom corner and hand Denia’s side an unlikely lifeline.

That gave the Czechs a fresh lift heading into the final 15 minutes, and they thought they had levelled when substitute Ryan Naderi poked in from close range, only for his effort to be ruled out for a foul in the build-up.

Grateful for the let-off, Spain were handed a further boost five minutes from time when Ladislav Krejci received a second yellow card for a cynical challenge on Fernandez.

With the extra man, La Roja retook control of the contest and sealed the three points through Mikel Merino, who smashed home a loose ball in the box to preserve Spain’s 100% start in Group A3.
