West Ham United announces the passing of legendary player and manager Billy Bonds, who made 799 appearances for the club. Billy Bonds, West Ham's greatest-ever player, dies at 79, leaving behind a legacy of FA Cup triumphs and unwavering dedication.

“Never one to crave the limelight, he was universally loved, respected and admired by his team-mates...”

West Ham United is mourning the loss of their legendary former captain and manager, Billy Bonds, who has passed away at the age of 79. The Premier League club announced the news on Sunday, paying tribute to a true icon of the team.

Bonds holds the record as West Ham's longest-serving player, with an incredible 799 appearances across 21 years. During his time, he led the team to FA Cup victories in 1975 and 1980, and later managed the club from 1990 to 1994, securing promotions to the top division.

Tributes are pouring in, with current captain Jarrod Bowen describing Bonds as “West Ham's biggest legend and the best club captain they've had.” The team held a minute's applause in his honor before their match against Liverpool, and a full tribute is planned for their next home game against Aston Villa.

The legendary player's achievements on the pitch were impressive, lifting the FA Cup twice in 1975 and 1980, and reaching the 1976 European Cup Winners' Cup final. He also won the old Second Division with West Ham, cementing his place in the club's history.

Transitioning into coaching, he initially worked with the West Ham youth team before being appointed manager in February 1990. Under his leadership, the club secured promotion from the Second Division in 1991 and, after relegation from the top flight in 1992, he led the club to promotion again a year later, showcasing his skills as a manager.

“We are heartbroken to announce that we lost our beloved Dad today. He was devoted to his family and was the most kind, loyal, selfless, and loving person,” a statement from Bonds' family said.

“Dad loved West Ham United and its wonderful supporters with all his heart and treasured every moment of his time at the club.

“He will always be in our hearts and eternally missed. We take comfort knowing that his legacy will live on forever.”

Billy Bonds departed West Ham United in 1994, handing over the reins to his trusted assistant Harry Redknapp. A true legend, Bonds was voted the club's greatest-ever player and has a stand named in his honor at London Stadium.

“Never one to crave the limelight, he was universally loved, respected and admired by his team-mates, players and supporters, who will forever consider themselves 'Billy Bonds' Claret and Blue Army',” a West Ham statement said.

“Rest in peace Billy, our courageous, inspirational, lion-hearted leader.”

West Ham United will pay tribute to Billy Bonds with a special appreciation ceremony before their Premier League match against Liverpool. A full tribute is scheduled to take place before their next home game against Aston Villa on December 14, giving fans a chance to celebrate his incredible legacy.

Former West Ham midfielder Joe Cole fondly remembered Bonds, saying, “Billy was manager when I signed as a kid and he was really kind to me and my family.” Tributes are pouring in for the legendary player, with fans and fellow players alike sharing their memories and respect for a true West Ham icon.

“Growing up at West Ham, his name's synonymous with the club. Everything that's good about West Ham, Billy Bonds, that was him. It's really sad news and thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
