Porto dominated possession in the first half but struggled to create clear chances. The biggest moments were Pepe and Dominik Prpic's yellow cards for dissent. Utrecht took the lead just after halftime with a set-piece masterclass, as Souffian El Karouani's free kick found Miguel Rodriguez, who thumped the ball past Diogo Costa.

FC Utrecht's joy was short-lived as FC Porto's Borja Sainz scored the equalizer in the 66th minute, and goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas received a red card for a headbutt. Utrecht faced a tough final 30 minutes, with El Karouani's long-range shot testing FC Porto's goalkeeper Diogo Costa.
