West Ham United manager Nuno Espirito Santo celebrates his first Premier League win as the Hammers beat Newcastle United 3-1 at the London Stadium.

“The players are realising that, winning in the Premier League, we have to work very hard. We will do it again...”

West Ham United manager Nuno Espirito Santo celebrated his first Premier League victory in charge of the club with a thrilling 3-1 win over Newcastle United on Sunday. As the final whistle sounded, Espirito Santo punched the air, beaming with pride and relief after his team fought back from an early deficit.

The Hammers had looked set for another disappointing result when Jacob Murphy's early goal gave Newcastle the lead. However, West Ham showed remarkable resilience and determination, with Lucas Paqueta leveling the score with a stunning long-range shot. Just before halftime, Sven Botman's own goal gave West Ham the advantage, and Tomas Soucek sealed the win with a late goal in stoppage time.

Post-Match Reactions

Espirito Santo expressed his delight and relief after the match, saying, “The players are realizing that, winning in the Premier League, we have to work very hard. We will do it again. The win makes it easier, there are smiles and the legs feel easier.” Meanwhile, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe was disappointed with his team's performance, acknowledging that they “didn't perform” and “let West Ham in with some uncharacteristic errors.

“The players are realising that, winning in the Premier League, we have to work very hard. We will do it again. The win makes it easier, there are smiles and the legs feel easier,” the former Nottingham Forest manager told the BBC.

“We see slight improvements on the pitch. We have to create a platform on the pitch... it means a lot for us as a club and our fans. We are able to give them something. It was terrific to hear the noise at the London Stadium.”

Newcastle's struggles away from home continued as they were outplayed by West Ham, failing to capitalize on their chances and ultimately succumbing to a 3-1 defeat. The Magpies have yet to secure a win on the road this season, and their lackluster display against West Ham, a team ranked near the bottom of the table, raises concerns about their ability to compete.

“I can't really defend the performance; it was really disappointing after that start. I thought we could control the game, but we didn't - we let West Ham in with some uncharacteristic errors," Newcastle coach Eddie Howe said.

“I have to go away and reflect on it. This falls into the category that we didn't perform. This was a poor performance, but they happen.

“It leaves us with a gap to bridge, and we can only do that with consistency, and we haven't found that this season,” he added.
