Manchester United's Ruben Amorim: We'll Focus on the Positives
Ruben Amorim hits back at Cristiano Ronaldo's warning, saying Manchester United will use the absence of European football to their advantage.
“We are changing a lot of things in the structure, the way we do things, the way we want the players to behave...”
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is urging the team to focus on the future after facing criticism from Cristiano Ronaldo, his former teammate and United legend. Amorim believes that dwelling on past mistakes won't help the team move forward.
Ronaldo expressed his concerns about Manchester United's current state in a recent interview with Piers Morgan, stating that the team is “not on a good path” and that Amorim faces significant challenges in turning things around. According to Ronaldo, Amorim won't be able to perform “miracles” at Old Trafford.
The 40-year-old Al Nassr forward expressed his views on Manchester United, stating, “We say in Portugal, ‘miracles only happen in Fatima,’” while also criticizing the club for lacking a long-term vision.
Ruben Amorim, who succeeded Erik ten Hag in November 2024, responded strongly ahead of Manchester United's Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
“Of course, he has a huge impact in everything he said,” Amorim said on Thursday. “What we need to focus (on) is in the future. We know that we as a club made a lot of mistakes in the past, but we are trying to change that. So let's not focus on what happened. Let's focus (on) what we are doing now.
“We are changing a lot of things in the structure, the way we do things, the way we want the players to behave. We are doing that and we are improving.”
Ronaldo voiced his disappointment over Manchester United's decline, emphasizing that the issues run deeper than the current managerial setup.
“You have to work with smart people to create a base for the future,” he said. “Right now, they don't have a structure.”
Manchester United is showing signs of improvement under Ruben Amorim, rising to eighth place and just two points shy of second place following a four-match unbeaten streak.
This Saturday's match against Tottenham Hotspur will be a crucial one, with provisional second place on the line. The game also carries a tinge of revenge for Amorim's side, following their 1-0 loss to Spurs in the Europa League final last season, which denied them a spot in the Champions League.
According to Amorim, the team's recent success can be attributed to internal reforms and changes that have been implemented, which he believes have contributed to the team's growing confidence and improved performances.
“Characteristics of the players are different in the team now,” he said. “We also have players who played last year. But we are a better team. We understand the game better. We are more confident.
“We reached the Europa League final confident that we could win it. But in this moment we're playing with a different confidence.”
"We are a better team and we are more confident." 👊

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim believes that not participating in European football this season has allowed his team to focus on their Premier League performance and internal reforms. Amorim stated that having more time to train and prepare without the added pressure of midweek European matches has been beneficial for the team. “It's us using the positives,” he said. “Any situation you have in life, you can look at it positively or in a bad way.” This approach is part of Amorim's efforts to move the team forward despite criticism from club legend Cristiano Ronaldo, who warned that Amorim wouldn't be able to perform “miracles” at Old Trafford.
“It's us using the positives,” he said. “Any situation you have in life, you can look at it positively or in a bad way.
“If you ask me whether I prefer to be here with the (Europa League) and Champions League football, I might say yes.
“But on the other side, you have more time to train and know your players. Arrange everything and prepare with the staff and players. So we try to use the positive thing of not playing in the midweek games.”
