FIFA has launched a new annual award called the FIFA Peace Prize, with the first winner set to be announced during the 2026 World Cup finals draw in Washington, DC next month. The prize aims to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to peace through football.
Dubbed the “FIFA Peace Prize – Football Unites the World,” the award will “reward individuals who have taken exceptional and extraordinary actions for peace,” according to FIFA. The governing body introduced the prize to highlight the power of football in promoting peace and unity worldwide.
“In an increasingly unsettled and divided world, it's fundamental to recognise the outstanding contribution of those who work hard to end conflicts and bring people together in a spirit of peace,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said.
“Football stands for peace, and on behalf of the entire global football community, the FIFA Peace Prize – Football Unites the World will recognise the enormous efforts of those individuals who unite people, bringing hope for future generations.”
The 2026 FIFA World Cup draw is scheduled for December 5 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., where 48 teams will discover their group stage opponents.
“We are uniting the world, Mr President, uniting the world, here in America, and we are very proud of that,” Infantino had told Trump before letting him hold the World Cup trophy.
Donald Trump had been vocal about his desire for the Nobel Peace Prize this year, even criticizing the Nobel Committee's decision to award it to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado.
