Estevao Ready for Chelsea Starting Role, Says Maresca
| Maresca confident Estevao can start for Chelsea |
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca believes 18-year-old Estevao is ready to start for Chelsea, despite adapting to English conditions.
“They are good, talented, young and, for sure, when they are young, you have to give them the chance to...”
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is standing firm on his squad rotation policy, despite criticism from Wayne Rooney. Maresca believes the physical demands of the game necessitate rotation, citing his 20-year playing career as evidence that the sport has changed.
Maresca's approach has led to 85 changes in Chelsea's starting lineup this season, the highest in the Premier League. He argues that young players like Andrey Santos, Jorrel Hato, and Estevao need opportunities to develop, and that rotation is essential for the team's success.
Wayne Rooney has criticized Enzo Maresca's frequent team changes, stating that it's preventing players from building relationships on the pitch. Rooney believes captain Reece James and other senior players should challenge Maresca's approach, saying, “The players want to play, they want to build relationships.”
Maresca responded to Rooney's criticism, acknowledging the physical demands of modern football. “Football is a bit different compared to years ago in terms of physicality and intensity,” Maresca told reporters. He emphasized the need for rotation, given the congested schedule and Chelsea's participation in multiple competitions.
“For me personally, it's impossible to play with the same players for 65 games a season - Champions League, Premier League.”
'You need to rotate'
“I played for 20 years – it was not as physical and now it's changed. You need to rotate. This is my personal view,” the much-travelled Italian manager added.
“I think you need to do that if you want to see a season like a marathon. Then, when you are in February and March, when it's the last sprint, you probably have to think in a different way. But at the moment, you have to think like a long race.”
Enzo Maresca has defended his rotation policy, stating that criticism from Wayne Rooney only surfaced after Chelsea's draw against Qarabag in the Champions League. Maresca emphasized that he's simply trying to give young, talented players like Andrey Santos, Jorrel Hato, and Estevao opportunities to develop, citing the physical demands of modern football as a reason for rotation.
“I think that when the rotation is Andrey Santos - Brazil international player, Jorrel Hato - Holland international player, Estevao - Brazil international player, it's not about rotation,” Maresca said.
“They are good, talented, young and, for sure, when they are young, you have to give them the chance to make some mistakes to be better.
“The same thing happened in the past with Josh Acheampong. But I understand that when you don't win games, the problem is rotation and all different things.”
Jorrel Hato had a tough night against Qarabag, being caught out for their first goal and handling to concede a penalty for their second in the 2-2 Champions League draw.

Estevao Ready for Starting Role
Enzo Maresca believes Estevao is ready to start for Chelsea, despite the 18-year-old Brazilian still adjusting to English conditions. “We are trying to do the best for Estevao, helping him adapt to England,” Maresca said, acknowledging the challenges Estevao has faced. The young midfielder has primarily made cameos this season, but Maresca is confident he's ready for a bigger role.
"Last week he was complaining about it being too cold. Last week was still October, so imagine December and January - he has to adapt.
“He is happy, doing fantastic and for sure he's a talented player for this club.”
