The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) is taking decisive action against referees involved in betting. TFF President Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu revealed that an investigation, backed by data from state institutions, found 371 out of 571 active referees in Turkey's professional leagues had betting accounts. Furthermore, 152 of these referees were actively placing bets.




The TFF's disciplinary board will initiate proceedings against the implicated referees, who could face penalties ranging from three months to one year of suspension from officiating or any football-related activities. The investigation uncovered some alarming trends, including one referee who placed a staggering 18,227 bets, while 42 others bet on over 1,000 matches each.


Scope of the Investigation

The probe covered a five-year period and found that seven top-tier referees, 15 top-tier assistants, 36 classified referees, and 94 classified assistants had betting accounts. The TFF is committed to maintaining the integrity of football and will take strict action against any officials found guilty of betting.

“As a federation, we started by cleaning up our own backyard,” Haciosmanoglu told a press conference in Istanbul.


“Among those found to have betting accounts were seven top-level referees, 15 top-level assistants, 36 classified referees, and 94 classified assistants.”

Referees found guilty of betting on football matches face penalties ranging from three months to one year, as per Article 57 of the TFF's disciplinary code. The findings cover a five-year period under Turkey's sports law, and the TFF will impose bans on referees involved in betting activities.
