West Ham United's new manager, Nuno Espirito Santo, is optimistic about the team's prospects despite a poor start to the season.

“It's all about competing, every ball matters - the message was clear, and the boys are slowly...”

Nuno Espirito Santo is optimistic about West Ham's prospects despite their poor start to the season. In their first match under his leadership, the team earned a 1-1 draw against Everton, a result that Santo believes showcases signs of improvement Santo said, “slowly, I think, understanding that football match is also about how we close (down the route to) our own goal, how many chances we concede.”

Santo acknowledged that there is still plenty of work to be done, particularly in strengthening West Ham's defense at set pieces, which proved to be a vulnerability in the match against Everton. The team conceded the opening goal following a corner kick, a pattern that has repeated itself in previous matches. Despite this, Santo was encouraged by his team's response in the second half, where they started defending better and managed to equalize through Jarrod Bowen's goal.

“Our message today was very clearly about competing as a team, being close to each other, and the boys did well. I think overall it is a good first, first game for us,” the 51-year-old Portuguese coach said.

“This game is going to be the tool, the main tool, for us to move forward. Now we're going to analyse it. It's all about knowing the players better, trying to take the right decisions in the right moment.”

Areas for Improvement:

Defending at Set Pieces: West Ham needs to work on their defensive strategy at set pieces to avoid conceding goals.

Team Cohesion: Santo emphasized the importance of teamwork and collective effort in achieving their goals.

Building Momentum: With only four points from their opening six Premier League matches, West Ham needs to build momentum quickly to climb out of the relegation zone.

Much of that analysis will focus on strengthening West Ham's defence at set pieces as they once again conceded a goal following a corner, but Espirito Santo saw plenty he can work with as his side pulled a goal back in the second half to secure the draw.

“It's all about competing, every ball matters - the message was clear, and the boys are slowly, I think, understanding that football match is also about how we close (down the route to) our own goal, how many chances we concede,” he explained.

Nuno Espirito Santo aims to mold West Ham United into a well-organized and disciplined team, similar to the teams he previously managed at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest. He plans to instill a strong defensive structure and promote effective counter-attacking play. With a focus on incremental improvements, Santo is determined to build a cohesive unit that can consistently compete in the Premier League.

“It's so difficult, it's so hard, it takes so much time (to build a team), and our approach is simple - day by day, the best of us, the best of us every day,” he said.
