'Italy on the right track,' Gattuso earns accolades from predecessor Spalletti

Former Italy coach Luciano Spalletti praises Gennaro Gattuso's successful turnaround of the World Cup qualifying campaign, with Italy securing three consecutive wins under his leadership.

“I trust Gattuso. I'm sure that, as he's already shown, he'll find the right solutions to keep this journey going...”

Former Italy coach Luciano Spalletti has expressed admiration for his successor, Gennaro Gattuso, who has successfully revived Italy's World Cup qualifying campaign. Under Gattuso's leadership, Italy has secured three consecutive wins, showcasing a marked improvement in their performance.

Gattuso took the reins after Spalletti's dismissal in June, following a crushing defeat to Norway. Since then, Italy has won two matches against Estonia and one against Israel. Spalletti attributes this success to Gattuso's tactical adjustments, particularly positioning forwards closer together, which has provided effective solutions in challenging matches.

“I trust Gattuso. I'm sure that, as he's already shown, he'll find the right solutions to keep this journey going and achieve what he wants, what he dreams of,” Spalletti said, expressing his confidence in Gattuso's leadership. With 12 points from five matches, Italy currently sits second in Group I and is set to face third-placed Israel in Udine, where a win would cement their second spot and guarantee at least a playoff spot.

“I trust Gattuso. I'm sure that, as he's already shown, he'll find the right solutions to keep this journey going and achieve what he wants, what he dreams of,” Spalletti told reporters on Sunday.

“He's also adjusted a few things tactically in these last matches, because having the forwards closer together has given solutions, especially in games where we faced difficulties - like against Israel - in terms of their playing style.

“They did well, finding more direct plays that allowed us to win.”

Italy, seeking to reclaim their spot in the European Championship for the first time since 2014, currently hold second place in Group I with 12 points from five matches. A win against Israel in their upcoming match would solidify their position and guarantee a playoff spot.

Italy's next challenge is against third-placed Israel in Udine on Tuesday. Securing a victory would not only strengthen their second-place position but also ensure participation in the playoffs. Meanwhile, Norway tops the group with a six-point lead, having played one more game than Italy.
