Former West Ham boss Graham Potter eyes Sweden National Team role

Former Chelsea and West Ham boss Graham Potter is interested in the Sweden national team job. Read more about his chances.

“I'm at a point where the next thing I take on has to be something I truly believe in...”

Former Chelsea and West Ham United coach Graham Potter is open to taking over as Sweden's national team manager after Jon Dahl Tomasson's sacking. Potter, who previously managed Swedish club Ostersunds, expressed his interest in the role, citing his love for the country and Swedish football.

Graham Potter spent seven years managing Ostersunds, leading the team from the fourth tier to the top flight and into European competitions. He stated that he has feelings for Sweden and feels grateful for the opportunities the country has provided him. Potter believes the Sweden job would be a fantastic opportunity, allowing him to return to a country where he has built strong connections.

Sweden's World Cup qualifying campaign has been struggling, with the team sitting at the bottom of their group with just one point from four matches. While their chances of direct qualification seem slim, they still hold hopes of reaching the World Cup through the playoffs. Potter's experience and success in Swedish football make him a potential candidate to lead the team to a resurgence.

“I have strong feelings for Sweden. I have a lot to be thankful for when it comes to Swedish football.

“Two of my children were born here, I've experienced several different leagues here. I feel I have a deep understanding of the country and its football culture.”

Graham Potter, who was dismissed by West Ham in September, has expressed interest in the Sweden national team manager position. Potter spent over seven years at Swedish club Ostersund, successfully guiding them from the fourth tier to the top flight and European competition.

“I'm between jobs and open to anything where I feel I can contribute,” Potter told Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen from his house in Sweden. This statement highlights his eagerness to take on a new challenge and contribute to a team. Given his experience in Swedish football, the Sweden national team job seems like a potential fit.

“I'm at a point where the next thing I take on has to be something I truly believe in,” Potter said.

“I need to feel I can help and that I'll be supported. I've gained a lot of experience so far and I'm very grateful for the career I've had.

“But I'm only 50, and I still have a lot to offer. It's not about finding a job at a specific level, but finding something where I feel I can make a difference.”

Graham Potter dismissed rumors that he had prior discussions with the Swedish football federation about the national team role. However, if approached, Potter implied that his decision would be more driven by the project's potential and appeal rather than financial considerations.

“I've been fortunate to have the career I've had. That means I'm in a very good financial position,” Potter said.

“It's reached a point where I don't have to consider money as a reason to take or not take a job.”
