Former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki clashes with tennis expert Peter Bastiansen over retirement speculation.
“I will fall out of my chair if she is ready for the Australian Open in January. It will be a travesty if she does...”
Caroline Wozniacki has launched a strong verbal attack on tennis expert Peter Bastiansen after he criticized her for not making a clear announcement about her retirement. The former World No. 1 tennis player responded to Bastiansen's comments with a scathing rebuke, accusing him of bullying her for over 20 years.
Bastiansen had said, “I can't understand why she doesn't make an announcement. What's the point in not saying something? She will never, ever return to top tennis. That race is over. Why doesn't she just say it? There is nothing wrong or unnatural about that.” He also added, “I'll fall off my chair if she declares herself ready for the Australian Open in January. It would be a parody if she did. It would simply be deeply unserious. I can't see why the organisers would even bother to give her a wildcard.”
Wozniacki fired back, calling Bastiansen a “clown” and saying, “It's now been more than 20 years that Peter Bastiansen has bullied me and attacked me personally in the media, talking about things he doesn't understand. Peter, you're a clown, and as a so-called 'tennis expert' you should know the rules. It can be hard to keep track of them when you've never played at a high level yourself.” She also pointed out that she has a frozen ranking of world No. 71, which means she doesn't need wildcards to enter big tournaments.
“All big sports stars announce this, so I don't understand it.
“I will fall out of my chair if she is ready for the Australian Open in January. It will be a travesty if she does. It will simply not be very serious. I don't see why the organizers would bother to give her a wildcard.”
Caroline Wozniacki slammed on Instagram a Danish TV commentator who said that "it would be frivolous if she decides to make a new comeback".

On Tuesday evening, Caroline Wozniacki took to Instagram to fiercely respond to the accusations, launching a strong verbal counterattack against Bastiansen.
She writes on social media, before continuing: “But I have a frozen ranking of number 71 in the world, which means I don't need wildcards to get into the big tournaments.”
“After many years of hard training and top-level tennis, I have the right to do what is best for my family.”
“I don't understand why TV 2, B.T., and other media continue to use his quotes when there are many, many better experts in Denmark,” she writes.
