Xavi Simons Reveals Why He Chose Tottenham Over Chelsea

Xavi Simons joins Tottenham

Xavi Simons joins Tottenham Hotspur after snubbing Chelsea in a last-minute transfer deal worth £52 million. Read more about his decision and what he brings to the team.

“I've had many conversations. But once I spoke with the manager, it was clear to me that this was where I needed to be...”

Xavi Simons has revealed why he chose Tottenham over Chelsea, citing the club's project and coach Thomas Frank as key factors in his decision. “First of all, the project, I think it suits me. The second thing, I think the most important thing for me, is the coach,” Simons explained. He was impressed by Frank's presentation, which ultimately sealed the deal for him.

Simons expressed his excitement about joining Tottenham, stating, “I'm really happy and can't wait to get going. I've been dreaming of this for a long time.” He believes he can bring flair, hard work, and discipline to the team, and is committed to winning games for the team and fans.

The transfer, worth £52 million, saw Tottenham swoop in at the last minute to snatch Simons from under Chelsea's nose. Chelsea had reportedly been interested in Simons earlier in the summer but never made a formal offer, instead focusing on other targets. Tottenham's swift approach and Frank's convincing pitch won Simons over, and he has signed a five-year contract with the option of an additional two years.

The 22-year-old playmaker is expected to bring a creative spark to Tottenham Hotspur, a quality the team lacked in their recent match against Bournemouth. Fans are thrilled about his arrival in north London, anticipating his skills will enhance the team's performance.

Many were puzzled by his decision to join Spurs over Chelsea, given his expressed desire to leave RB Leipzig. However, the player revealed that discussions with manager Thomas Frank played a significant role in his choice. It seems Frank's vision and leadership resonated with the player, influencing his decision to join Tottenham.

“I've had many conversations. But once I spoke with the manager, it was clear to me that this was where I needed to be. I'd had the same experience at previous clubs.”

“When I spoke with Ruud van Nistelrooy (at PSV), I immediately knew: 'Okay, this is where I need to be and where I can develop myself.' That's what happened at Leipzig. I felt an immediate connection. Not just with him, but with the entire club.

“But the manager is the most important person. I met Micky (van de Ven) there too. It just gave me a good feeling.”

Xavi Simons on His Instant Connection with Spurs

Xavi Simons attributed his immediate connection with Tottenham to manager Thomas Frank and Dutch international Micky van de Ven. Their interactions likely played a significant role in his decision to join the club, making him feel comfortable and confident about his choice.

Tottenham's manager Thomas Frank believes Xavi Simons can bring more than just creativity to the team. When asked if Simons' creativity was what Tottenham was missing against Bournemouth, Frank praised the Netherlands international, saying, “I think he can bring on a day where I can say our structure building up and all that, because it’s not only about that.” This suggests Frank sees Simons as a game-changer who can enhance the team's overall performance, not just provide creative spark.

Simons himself has expressed excitement about joining Tottenham, highlighting his ability to bring “flair to the team but also hard work and discipline.” He believes Spurs is the right place for him to develop, thanks to Frank's vision and honesty about areas for improvement. With Simons' impressive stats, including 11 goals and 8 assists in 33 matches last season, he's expected to make a significant impact for Tottenham.

“Then sometimes you need a player that can do something (clicks his fingers) a little bit out of nothing, go past the player, produce a cross, a shot, a pass, with that extra quality that you need on the day, and that’s what I think he can bring.”
