The Mike Gundy era at Oklahoma State has come to an end. Oklahoma State fires Mike Gundy after 21 seasons, citing recent team struggles.

“As we search for the next head coach of Cowboy Football, we are looking for someone who can lead our program...”

Oklahoma State University has parted ways with its legendary head coach Mike Gundy after an impressive 21-season tenure. The decision comes on the heels of a disappointing start to the season, with the team sporting a 1-2 record following losses to No. 9 Oregon (69-3) and Tulsa (19-12). Gundy's departure marks a significant shift in the program's landscape, given his unparalleled success and dedication to the university.

Gundy's achievements at Oklahoma State are noteworthy. With a record of 170-90, he is the winningest coach in the university's history. During his tenure, the team enjoyed 18 consecutive bowl appearances and eight 10-win seasons. The Cowboys also finished ranked in the top 15 five times under Gundy's leadership. His tenure was highlighted by a Big 12 championship in 2011 and multiple top-10 finishes.

The circumstances surrounding Gundy's exit likely stem from the team's recent performance. Oklahoma State won just three games in 2024, none of which were in conference play. The 2025 season has been equally challenging, with the team struggling to find its footing. Fans and donors grew increasingly frustrated, especially after the loss to Tulsa, which sparked “Fire Gundy” chants during the game.

Gundy's Legacy and Next Steps:

Legacy: Gundy's impact on Oklahoma State football is undeniable. He transformed the program into a national name, raised the standard in Stillwater, and delivered some of the biggest moments in school history.

Buyout: Oklahoma State will owe Gundy a $15 million buyout following his departure.

Future: The university will begin searching for a new head coach, with several rising coaches and OSU alumni expected to be in the mix.

“Cowboy Football reached an unprecedented level of success and national prominence under Coach Gundy's leadership,” said OSU Athletic Director Chad Weiberg. “I believe I speak for OSU fans everywhere when I say that we are grateful for all he did to raise the standard and show us all what is possible for Oklahoma State football.”

“College football has changed drastically in the last few years, and the investment needed to compete at the highest level has never been more important,” said Weiberg. “As we search for the next head coach of Cowboy Football, we are looking for someone who can lead our program in this new era. It is also important that we continue to support our student-athletes, our staff, and our university through the season, and I hope that our fans continue to show that support in Boone Pickens Stadium this fall.”

Mike Gundy's departure from Oklahoma State University marks the end of an era for the Cowboys football program. With a remarkable 170-90 record over 21 seasons, Gundy leaves behind a legacy of success, including 12 bowl wins and one Big 12 championship. His tenure saw the team finish in the AP Top 25 for 17 consecutive seasons, from 2008 to 2024, and make 18 straight bowl appearances from 2006 to 2023.

Gundy's Achievements:

  • Bowl Wins: 12, tying him for sixth in college football history
  • 10-Win Seasons: 8, showcasing his consistency and ability to build strong teams
  • Top 15 Finishes: 5, highlighting his capacity to lead the Cowboys to high rankings
  • Consecutive Winning Seasons: 18, tied for ninth-most in Division I football history

Gundy's impact extends beyond his win-loss record. He transformed the Oklahoma State program, elevating it to a national name and instilling a winning culture. His iconic press conference moment 18 years ago, where he shouted “I'm a man! I'm 40!,” remains etched in football history. Gundy's influence on the program will be remembered for generations to come.
