Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike may face a two-week wage fine for his red card in the Carabao Cup match against Southampton.

“I know how hard it is if you play in the Premier League and you are a number nine, then the defender can almost do...”

Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike may face disciplinary action for his behavior during the Carabao Cup match against Southampton. After scoring the winning goal, Ekitike removed his shirt in celebration, earning a second yellow card and subsequent red card.

Arne Slot, Liverpool's manager, described Ekitike's actions as “stupid” in the post-match press conference. Slot emphasized the importance of controlling emotions and avoiding actions that lead to yellow or red cards.

According to reports, Ekitike is likely to be fined two weeks' wages, amounting to approximately £400,000. This decision reflects Liverpool's commitment to maintaining discipline and setting standards for player behavior.

This incident may define Ekitike's start at Anfield if he doesn't learn from the experience. However, if he bounces back with strong performances, the red card will be forgotten. Ekitike has shown promise with five goals in eight appearances, and his ability to channel his energy positively will be crucial.

“The first one (yellow card) was already needless and to a certain extent stupid because you have to control your emotions,” the Dutchman said.

“I know how hard it is if you play in the Premier League and you are a number nine, then the defender can almost do everything he wants, and when you push him a little bit, you get a free-kick against you.

“But it is always best to control your emotions, and if you can't, then do it in a way that doesn't lead to a yellow card.

“So I think I said when I got my red card against Everton, that's always stupid because you can show your emotions.

“But if it leads to a yellow or red, then it's, to a certain extent, stupid.”
