Sunderland is set to sign RB Leipzig defender Lutsharel Geertruida on a loan deal, with a reported loan fee of €2.5 million. The Black Cats have secured an option to make the move permanent for €23 million, potentially adding a long-term solution to their defensive lineup.

Lutsharel Geertruida, a 25-year-old Dutch international defender, has had a challenging time in Germany since joining RB Leipzig from Feyenoord in August 2024 for around €20 million. Despite being a key player for Feyenoord, where he made 202 appearances between 2018 and 2024, Geertruida struggled to find consistency in his debut season with Leipzig, starting only 17 Bundesliga games, coming on as a substitute in 7, and being an unused substitute in another 7.

Geertruida's versatility as a defender, capable of playing as a centre-half and right-back, has been evident throughout his career. Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on July 18, 2000, Geertruida began his football journey at Overmaas Rotterdam before joining Sparta Rotterdam's youth academy and eventually moving to Feyenoord's youth setup. He made his professional debut for Feyenoord in the KNVB Cup in 2017.

Career Highlights:

  • Feyenoord (2018-2024): Made 202 appearances, scoring 23 goals across various competitions
  • RB Leipzig (2024-2025): Appeared in 35 matches, scoring 1 goal and providing 1 assist
  • Netherlands National Team: 17 caps, participating in the 2023 UEFA Nations League Finals and Euro 2024

Recently, Geertruida has completed a medical with Sunderland and is set to join the club on loan from RB Leipzig, with an option to buy for €23 million. This move comes after a season where he struggled to secure a consistent starting role in Germany.

However, his stint in Germany hasn't been as successful as expected. In the 2024/25 season, Geertruida started only 17 Bundesliga games for Leipzig, came on as a substitute in 7 matches, and remained an unused substitute in 7 more games.

Here are some key stats about Geertruida:

Height and Weight: 185 cm tall, weighing 75 kg

Preferred Foot: Right

Market Value: Approximately €22 million

Career Stats: Played 262 matches, scored 28 goals, and accumulated 13 assists

Position: Defender, capable of playing as a centre-half and right-back

Geertruida's experience in Germany might influence his potential loan move to Sunderland, where he could seek more playing time and revive his form.
