Jose Mourinho marked his return to Benfica with a resounding 3-0 victory over AVS Futebol SAD on Saturday. The match saw Heorhiy Sudakov score at the end of the first half, but it was Benfica who dominated the game, with Vangelis Pavlidis netting a penalty before the hour mark and Franjo Ivanovic sealing the win.
Mourinho's Celebration
Mourinho celebrated Benfica's third goal with unbridled enthusiasm, pumping his fist and kicking a cone in excitement. This win propelled Benfica to second place in the table, five points behind leaders Porto, having played one fewer match. With this convincing victory, Mourinho's experience and tactical prowess were on full display, leaving fans optimistic about the team's prospects.
The 62-year-old, who also coached Porto in the Portuguese top flight before leaving in 2004 to join Chelsea, will face both those teams within the next 15 days.
Mourinho, who won trophies with Real Madrid, Manchester United, Inter Milan as well as coaching various other sides, was sacked by Fenerbahce in August.
Benfica appointed Jose Mourinho as their new head coach on Thursday, just a day after sacking Bruno Lage following a shocking Champions League defeat to Qarabag. During his presentation, Mourinho emphasized his growth as a coach and person, describing himself as more “mature” and “altruistic” compared to his previous stint at Benfica. This marks Mourinho's return to the club 25 years after his initial spell, which lasted only 11 games.
Mourinho's appointment comes after a successful coaching career spanning top clubs like Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Chelsea. The 62-year-old Portuguese coach has signed a two-year contract with Benfica, expressing his commitment to the team's success. “I'm more altruistic, less self-centered, I think less about myself and more about the good I can do for others, the joy I can bring to others,” Mourinho said.

Upcoming Challenges
Mourinho's first match as Benfica manager will be an away fixture against AVS in the Portuguese top flight. He'll face immediate challenges with upcoming matches against former clubs Chelsea in the Champions League on September 30 and Porto in the Primeira Liga on October 5. Despite these challenges, Mourinho expressed confidence in his new team's potential, stating, “Benfica have enough potential within that dressing room to be champions.”
