FC Utrecht has secured a spot in the UEFA Europa League playoff round, extending their winning streak to five games. They defeated Servette FC 3-1 in the previous match, which took place at the Stade de Geneve on August 7, 2025. This win not only showcases Utrecht's current form but also marks a significant return to European competition for the club.

Due to injuries to key players David Min and Yoann Cathline, FC Utrecht's manager Ron Jans was forced to make changes to his front line. Noah Ohio and Miguel Rodriguez returned to the lineup, alongside new addition Adrian Blake, forming a formidable attacking trio. Utrecht's ability to adapt and still secure wins despite these challenges speaks to the team's depth and resilience.

The upcoming playoff round promises to be exciting, with FC Utrecht set to face the winner of HSK Zrinjski Mostar/Breidablik Kopavogur. The matches are scheduled for August 21 and 28, 2025. Utrecht's return to European competition after 14 years has generated significant interest and enthusiasm among fans, and the team looks to capitalize on this momentum.

FC Utrecht had a strong foundation heading into the match against Servette FC, having won the first leg 3-1 in Switzerland. This victory extended their unbeaten streak to five official games, showcasing their impressive form at the start of the season. Utrecht's Eredivisie campaign also kicked off on a high note with a 4-0 win over Heracles Almelo the previous weekend.

In the match against Servette, Utrecht didn't quite find their rhythm in the first half. Despite dominating possession, they struggled to create clear-cut chances. Gjivai Zechiël came closest to scoring, hitting the crossbar, but the Utrecht midfielder couldn't capitalize on the opportunity. Meanwhile, Adrian Blake thought he'd scored, only to have his goal disallowed for handball, leaving Utrecht to regroup at halftime.

Utrecht Secures Win Against Servette
FC Utrecht increased the pressure after halftime and finally broke through in the 57th minute. Victor Jensen scored his fourth goal in five games, tapping in a rebound after Servette goalkeeper Joel Mall failed to hold onto the ball. Jensen had a couple of close calls earlier in the match, and teammate Miliano Jonathans also threatened Servette's goal.

Jensen sealed the win for Utrecht with his second goal of the match, scoring after a well-executed team effort. Substitute Derry John Murkin provided a perfectly weighted pass to the unmarked Jensen in the box, and the Danish midfielder easily slotted the ball into the empty net, securing a 2-0 lead for Utrecht and putting them in a strong position to advance in the competition.

Utrecht's attempt to keep a clean sheet in the Europa League was foiled when Alonzo Engwanda fouled Jeremy Guillemenot, resulting in a penalty. Ablie Jallow converted the spot kick, reducing the deficit to 2-1. Despite this, Servette couldn't mount a comeback, and Utrecht secured the win.

Servette's European season will continue in the UEFA Conference League playoff round after their Champions League campaign ended. The team will look to regroup and refocus their efforts to achieve success in the Conference League.

FC Utrecht is set to play European football for the first time in 14 years, thanks to their guaranteed spot in the UEFA Conference League. However, if they want to stay in the Europa League, they'll face a familiar foe: Bosnian side Zrinjski Mostar.

Zrinjski Mostar previously eliminated FC Utrecht in the second round of the Europa League qualifying phase back in 2019. Ron Jans' side will need to overcome this hurdle if they aim to progress further in the Europa League. According to the UEFA Europa League schedule, the matches against Zrinjski Mostar or Breidablik Kopavogur are scheduled for August 21 and 28, 2025.
