Enzo Maresca's Chelsea Faces Tough Test Against Crystal Palace
Enzo Maresca's Chelsea faces a tough test against Crystal Palace, who have been in good form lately. Find out what the manager has to say about the upcoming match.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed that signing a new defender is a priority after Levi Colwill's ACL injury. Colwill, a key player for Chelsea, is expected to miss a significant part of the season after undergoing successful surgery. Maresca emphasized the importance of strengthening the team's defense, especially with Colwill's absence creating a tactical gap in his system.

Maresca hinted that Chelsea will likely turn to the transfer market to find a suitable replacement. The club has already started assessing their options, with potential targets including Marc Guehi, Joel Ordonez, Konstantinos Koulierakis, and Ilia Zabarnyi. However, some coaches within the club believe they can cope without a new signing, suggesting Renato Veiga or young Argentine defender Aaron Anselmino could be given opportunities.
The transfer window closes on September 1, giving Chelsea some time to find a suitable replacement for Colwill. Maresca's priority is to bolster the team's defense to maintain competitiveness in the league.
Chelsea defender will be out for an extended period due to an ACL injury. “He is okay but aware that he has to be a long time out,” said Chelsea manager Maresca, confirming the player's lengthy recovery time. Typically, ACL injuries require six to nine months of recovery before a player can return to action.
“It's a big loss for us. He was so important for us last season. We are able to create chances and attack in the right way if we are able to build in the right way. Levi was a huge part of that.
“The club know exactly what I am thinking. I think we need a central defender, but we are also looking for an internal solution.”
Chelsea are building on their successful season, where they finished fourth in the Premier League and won the Club World Cup by defeating Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in July. Manager Enzo Maresca is keeping his options open for further signings before the transfer window closes on September 1.
The Blues have already been active in the transfer market, shelling out over £240 million to bring in new talent.
Some notable signings include:
Attacking Midfielders:
- Joao Pedro: Signed from Brighton for £60 million
- Estevao Willian: Signed from Palmeiras for £29 million, potentially rising to £52 million with add-ons
- Kendry Paez: Signed from Independiente del Valle for £17.3 million
Forwards:- Liam Delap: Signed from Ipswich Town for £30 million
- Jamie Gittens: Signed from Borussia Dortmund for £48.5 million, potentially rising to £52 million with add-ons

Despite selling players like Joao Felix to Al-Nassr for £43.7 million and Noni Madueke to Arsenal for £48.5 million, Chelsea's net spend stands at around £83.2 million. Maresca's side has also raised over £160 million from player sales, including £28 million from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's move to Everton.
“We have a fantastic squad. We are happy with the squad we have, no doubt. When the transfer window is open, anything can happen,” the Italian, who will enter his second season at Chelsea, said.
“We are a better team compared to one year ago because we worked together every day for one season.”

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is cautious about facing Crystal Palace, who have recently beaten top teams. “Very difficult. They beat in two finals probably the two best teams in England over the last 10 or 15 years,” Maresca said, referencing Palace's FA Cup win over Manchester City and their FA Community Shield victory over Liverpool.
