Jannik Sinner cruises into the last 16 of Wimbledon with a dominant 6-1 6-3 6-1 win over Pedro Martinez, despite the Spaniard's shoulder injury. Read more about Sinner's impressive performance.
Jannik Sinner cruised into the second week of Wimbledon with a dominant win over Pedro Martinez, barely breaking a sweat. The Centre Court crowd was entertained by Martinez's exasperated cries of “C'mon Pedro” just seven points into the match, as it became clear Sinner was in control. As Sinner quickly moved to break Martinez for the second time, the crowd's initial amusement gave way to sympathy for the struggling Spaniard.
As Martinez's shoulder injury became apparent, the crowd rallied behind him, applauding every point and admiring his determination. However, Sinner showed no mercy, dominating the match to secure a convincing 6-1 6-3 6-1 win that sent a strong message to his potential title contenders. The victory propelled the world No. 1 into the last 16, showcasing his formidable form.
Despite Martinez receiving treatment for his injury, Sinner remained ruthless, cruising to a 6-1 6-3 6-1 win. The world No. 1 has now won his first three Wimbledon matches in straight sets, impressively dropping just 17 games in the process - a record-equalling feat at the tournament. Notably, Sinner has yet to lose his serve, showcasing his dominant form.

Jannik Sinner, seeking to become Italy's first Wimbledon champion, advanced to the last 16 with a dominant win. He'll next face Grigor Dimitrov, and Sinner expressed admiration for his defeated opponent: “Very happy with the win but we all saw that he was struggling with his shoulder. When you don't serve well on this surface it is hard. Huge respect to him to come out here and compete.”
Sterner Tests Ahead
If Sinner is to claim another Grand Slam title, he will face tougher challenges than Martinez, having easily dispatched earlier opponents like Luca Nardi and Aleksandar Vukic.
Martinez, ranked 52nd in the world, had reached his best Grand Slam performance by getting to the third round. However, his momentum stalled as he fell 2-0 down in the first set, trailing 5-0. The trainer's arrival on court to address his shoulder issue sparked a brief respite, with Martinez holding to love amidst cheers from the crowd and a wry smile from the struggling player.
The brief respite didn't spark a comeback for Martinez. Instead, Sinner took the first set and then broke Martinez in the second set to lead 3-2. Martinez had a chance to turn the tide, creating four break points in the eighth game, but Sinner held firm, ultimately breaking again to take the second set.
"I will manage my practice sessions around the race."

The trainer's second intervention didn't yield a similar turnaround for Martinez. Sinner quickly took a 5-0 lead in the third set, setting up match points and threatening a bagel. Martinez managed to hold, but it was short-lived as Sinner served up his 11th ace, creating three more match points. The Italian sealed the win when Martinez's return sailed off target.
Jannik Sinner's opening week at Wimbledon was a resounding success, conceding just 17 games in three matches and equaling Jan Kodes' 1972 record for fewest games lost in the professional era. “Every time you enter a Grand Slam in the first week it is special, even more so at Wimbledon,” Sinner said. “We are trying to keep pushing but this week could not have gone better for me.”
