Fresh from winning the Coppa Italia for the first time in 51 years, Bologna started strongly in Tuscany. They put Fiorentina's goal under significant pressure in the opening 10 minutes. However, Bologna struggled to effectively involve goalkeeper David de Gea, with Santiago Castro particularly wasteful in front of goal.

Fiorentina quickly responded, restoring their lead in just six minutes. Parisi was again involved in the buildup as La Viola regained the advantage.
