Oscar Piastri tops FP1 in Miami Grand Prix, Lando Norris struggles with tools left in car.
Oscar Piastri topped the sole practice session for the Miami Grand Prix, driving his McLaren to a fastest lap time of 1:27.128 seconds on soft tires. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc trailed behind, 0.356 seconds off the pace.
Piastri's teammate Lando Norris faced issues during the session, having to pit and discard tools that were left in his car, which led to an investigation by the FIA stewards. Norris ultimately finished 12th, 1.263 seconds behind Piastri, with McLaren receiving a warning.
Max Verstappen, the reigning champion, secured third place, 0.430 seconds behind Piastri's time. The Red Bull driver had recently celebrated the birth of his first child with partner Kelly Piquet. The top five positions were rounded out by Williams' Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively. The session was briefly interrupted when Ollie Bearman spun into the barriers at Turn 12, triggering a red flag.
The Miami Grand Prix features a sprint format, with qualifying for the Saturday 100km race taking place later on Friday. Lando Norris, the 2023 Miami winner, struggled in practice, finishing 12th due to red flags that prevented him from completing a lap on soft tires.
Norris's session was disrupted when he discovered tools, including a torch, left in the cockpit. He had to pit early, and the stewards investigated McLaren for releasing the car in an unsafe condition, potentially facing a fine.
