Luis Enrique's PSG Deserve Final Spot After Arsenal Win

Paris Saint-Germain secured their spot in the Champions League final with a 3-1 aggregate win over Arsenal, despite a 2-1 victory in the second leg that required goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma's crucial saves.

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique believes his team rightfully earned their spot in the Champions League final after defeating Arsenal. PSG secured a 3-1 aggregate victory, with a 2-1 win in the second leg in Paris.

“Over the two legs, we scored more goals than them, and in football, that's the most important thing,” Enrique said, acknowledging Arsenal's strong performance. “We suffered a lot, but we deserved our place in the final.” Enrique emphasized his team's determination to lift the trophy, highlighting their dominance in the two-leg match.

Fabian Ruiz and Achraf Hakimi scored either side of halftime to put Paris Saint-Germain in control. Bukayo Saka pulled one back for Arsenal, but PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made crucial saves to secure the win.

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta felt his team had been better over the two legs. PSG coach Luis Enrique acknowledged the challenge, saying, “It is the match in which we suffered the most (in the Champions League) but we deserve to get to the final.”

Paris Saint-Germain will face Inter Milan in the Champions League final on May 31 in Munich. PSG advanced to the final after an impressive run, eliminating Premier League teams Liverpool and Aston Villa in addition to Arsenal.

The French champions overcame a rocky start in the competition, having faced elimination after losing three of their first five matches, including a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in the league phase.

Paris Saint-Germain finished 15th out of 36 teams in the Champions League league phase, eight points behind Liverpool. Despite this, Luis Enrique believes his team deserved more points. “I think throughout the competition it is clear that the results are what counts, we know that, but in the league phase there is no doubt we deserved nine points more,” he said.

“The fact we had such a difficult set of fixtures in the league phase helped the team improve and grow.

“The statistics showed we were one of the best teams in Europe, and when we started to be more clinical, in a short competition, I think we have showed that we deserve to be in the final.”

Paris Saint-Germain will play in their second Champions League final, five years after losing 1-0 to Bayern Munich in Lisbon. Last season, under Luis Enrique, PSG reached the semifinals, where they were beaten by Borussia Dortmund.

“There is no logic in football, but the first day I was here I said the objective was to work towards being able to make history, and that is our objective, to be the first to win this so-desired trophy,” Luis Enrique said, reflecting on his ambition for the club. The former Barcelona coach will celebrate his 55th birthday on Thursday.
