Australian sprinter Caleb Ewan has shocked the cycling world by announcing his immediate retirement from professional cycling at the age of 30. Ewan, a five-time Tour de France stage winner, cited the toll of the last two years as the reason for his decision to step away from the sport.

Ewan's professional career spanned over a decade, starting with the Jayco-Alula team in 2014, followed by a stint with Lotto-Soudal before joining INEOS Grenadiers at the beginning of 2025. Despite his success, Ewan's last two years were marked by turbulence, ultimately leading to his decision to retire.

Caleb Ewan attributed his decision to retire from professional cycling to the challenges he faced in 2023 and 2024, stating that these two years were the primary reason for his immediate departure from the sport.

He said: "The truth is that even when I crossed the line first, that feeling - the one you chase for years - faded quicker than it used to.

“My experiences of the past two seasons, in particular the second half of 2024, has taken a significant toll on my relationship with the sport. I'm happy I didn’t let that period define the end of my career and I am proud of what I achieved in a short but successful time with the INEOS Grenadiers.”

Caleb Ewan's professional cycling career exceeded his expectations, marked by numerous notable victories. He won five stages at the Tour de France between 2019 and 2020, as well as five stages at the Giro d'Italia and one stage at La Vuelta a España.

Ewan also enjoyed success at the Tour Down Under, his home race, where he claimed nine stage wins, showcasing his prolific sprinting ability.

Caleb Ewan's distinctive sprinting style, characterized by leaning over the handlebars for aerodynamics, was a hallmark of his career. He showcased this style just a month ago, securing his final victory on stage two of the Itzulia Tour.

INEOS Grenadiers CEO John Allert praised Ewan, saying: “Thank you Caleb, on behalf of INEOS Grenadiers and everyone in our beautiful sport, for thrilling us with your unique and explosive brand of racing. You leave the sport with our respect and best wishes, and as a winner - in every sense of the word.”
