Novak Djokovic's quest for a 100th career title suffered a setback as unseeded Matteo Arnaldi stunned the Serb 6-3, 6-4 in the Madrid Open's second round. This marks Djokovic's second consecutive opening defeat, following his loss to Alejandro Tabilo in Monte Carlo two weeks ago.
Arnaldi, ranked 44th, celebrated his landmark win with a cheeky “OMG” scribbled on the camera lens. “At the start I was just trying to not s*** in my pants, to be honest,” the 24-year-old admitted. Arnaldi dominated the first set, wrapping it up in 48 minutes after breaking Djokovic's serve in the eighth game.
Djokovic, a three-time Madrid champion, struggled with unforced errors, firing 20 in the first set and finishing with 32. Meanwhile, American Coco Gauff and Russian Mirra Andreeva advanced to the next round, continuing their Madrid Open campaigns.
“He's my idol, he's always been. I was just glad that I could play him because I never played him, I just practised once with him. So playing him on a stage like this was already a victory for me,” said Arnaldi, who showcased an entertaining brand of all-court tennis.
“But, you know, he is not at his best right now, so I came on court to try to play my best tennis and win. It happened. So right now, I don't even know what to say.”
Lorenzo Musetti advanced to the third round of the Madrid Open, defeating Tomas Etcheverry 7-6(3), 6-2. The Italian will face Stefanos Tsitsipas next, following a strong performance in his first match since reaching the Monte Carlo final.
Novak Djokovic has lost in his opening match in 4 of his last 5 tournaments.

This is also the first time he’s lost back to back opening round matches in Masters 1000 events since 2018.

Musetti, currently ranked 11th, is on the verge of breaking into the top 10. He jokingly avoided checking the live rankings, saying, “This week, I don't want to look.” However, he had risen to number nine in the live rankings by Saturday.
Madison Keys rallied from a setback to defeat Anna Kalinskaya 7-5, 7-6(3) in the Madrid Open. After being broken while serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set, Keys showed resilience to secure her spot in the next round.
“I knew I had to raise my level after getting a bit of a spanking last time,” Keys said, referencing her earlier loss to Kalinskaya in Charleston this month.
Madison Keys will face Donna Vekic in the round of 16 after her hard-fought win over Anna Kalinskaya. Vekic advanced with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Emma Navarro.
Coco Gauff booked her spot in the last 16 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Ann Li, setting up a clash with Olympic champion Belinda Bencic. Meanwhile, Mirra Andreeva continued her strong form, defeating Magdalena Frech 7-5, 6-3. The 17-year-old Russian will face Yulia Starodubtseva for a chance to reach the quarterfinals.
