Remco Evenepoel shares his struggles after a severe crash that almost ended his cycling career. Read more about his journey.
Remco Evenepoel revealed that his cycling career might have been over after a severe crash in December. “Of course, the injuries were quite severe,” he said, describing the extent of his damage, including a heavily damaged shoulder with destroyed muscles and ligaments.
Evenepoel underwent significant surgery and faced a tough recovery period, especially given it was his second shoulder issue in six months. “It was just a difficult period... So at a certain point, you start to doubt, will the shoulder be healthy again? Will it be functional again?” he shared, highlighting his concerns about his future in cycling. Evenepoel is set to make his comeback in the Brabantse Pijl.

Remco Evenepoel revealed that a nerve problem in his shoulder hasn't fully healed, resulting in a part of his shoulder muscle not functioning. “If I were a tennis, volleyball or basketball player, my career would have been over. Luckily, I'm a cyclist,” he said, acknowledging the challenges he faces.
Evenepoel has experienced several major crashes, including incidents at the 2020 Giro di Lombardia and Tour of the Basque Country. “It's not the first big crash that I've had,” he noted. He faced a tough recovery period after his latest crash, having to wait six weeks before resuming training while others were already in full swing.
Evenepoel is set to compete in the Brabantse Pijl, Amstel Gold Race, La Fleche Wallonne, and Liege-Bastogne-Liege. ”I'm behind my top shape, but I'm still in good shape. Will it be enough to beat guys like Tom Pidcock and Tadej Pogacar, who are in the shapes of their lives, I don't know,” he said. When asked about beating Pogacar, Evenepoel added, “If I don't believe it, I won't be at the start... If I have good legs, why not.”
