CBF Cracks Down on Unsportsmanlike Conduct with New Rule

The Brazilian Football Federation warns players that standing on the ball will result in a yellow card, following a similar incident involving Memphis Depay.

The Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) has issued a directive to referees to punish players who stand on the ball with yellow cards. This move comes after a similar incident involving Dutch forward Memphis Depay in the Paulista Championship final sparked a brawl. The CBF's decision aims to maintain fair play and sportsmanship in Brazilian football.

The CBF's stance was reinforced when two players were given yellow cards for standing on the ball during a match between Bolivia and Brazil in the South American U17 Championship. The CBF cited advice from CONMEBOL, stating, “Last week, (continental body) CONMEBOL advised... of the need to comply with the technical and disciplinary measure, indirect free kick and yellow card, respectively, when an athlete carries out this act.” This move demonstrates the CBF's commitment to enforcing the rules and promoting a culture of respect in the sport.

CBF Responds to Depay's Criticism
The Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) clarified that they followed CONMEBOL's recommendation in implementing the new rule, which punishes players for standing on the ball with a yellow card. This response comes after Dutch forward Memphis Depay criticized the CBF's decision, stating that he didn't see an issue with his actions. Depay expressed his frustration on social media, saying, “Let's focus on what rules can improve the sport and focus on the business side of football, what benefits the clubs, the fans, and players, instead of these silly announcements.”

The Incident That Sparked the Controversy

The controversy began when Depay stood on the ball during a Paulista Championship match between Corinthians and Palmeiras on March 27. The incident led to a brawl between the two teams, with two defenders confronting Depay near the touchline where Corinthians substitutes were warming up. The match was delayed for several minutes, but Corinthians ultimately won the title with a 0-0 draw after 16 minutes of stoppage time. Despite the controversy, Depay's actions were seen as a catalyst for the CBF's decision to crack down on unsportsmanlike conduct.
